1978 Yamaha XS750 Special motorcycle, in a triple configuration, with a shaft drive, and a first for that year, electronic ignition. This is as fine of an example of this bike as you will see anywhere, outside of a museum. This is not a barn find; I got the bike from a retired motorcycle mechanic who had several bikes, but this one was his 'baby', and it shows. Always kept inside and lovingly maintained. I have gone through this bike and it needs nothing, except a new rider. It has had: --New tires, zero miles on them --New tank and side cover badges --New black lacquer paint, correct for the period --New grips and controls --Valves adjusted --Carburetors cleaned and rebuilt with new diaphragms on the slides --New spark plugs --New NGK plug caps and correct 7mm solid core spark plug wires --New clutch cable --All bearings good, brakes good and battery good --Both fuel petcocks rebuilt --New OEM carburetor boots --Gas cap rebuilt --Gas tank lined --Oil and filter changed, air filter serviced All electronics work, bike starts right up and runs awesome. Bike is 100% original and complete, even down to the tool pouch under the seat. If you live in the Tucson area, I would make myself available for inspection, and a test ride, provided you have a license with a valid motorcycle endorsement. I will not ship the motorcycle, however if you desire to have it shipped, you will need to make all of the arrangements, payment, etc. In this case I will do what I can to facilitate the shipping, meet the people who pick it up, etc. I am also including Japan as a country I will sell to. I do not normally do this, but it would be kind of neat to 'expatriate' the bike back to where it was born.

This is a 1978 Yamaha XS 750 Special. It starts and runs goo, shifts smoothlyb through all gears and clutch and brakes work fine. The engine is not original. I believe it is from a 76 but not sure.The original air box has been removed and aftermarket air filter system installed. In line petcocks have been installed as over several months the petcocks leak a bit. Out on the road this machine is a pure joy to ride! It is smooth, powerful and handles excellently. What stuff does it need??? 1) rear tire is dry cracked. It would be a good idea to replace both tires. 2) the OEM air box has been ditched in favor of an aftermarket system 3) The head light does not turn on. It was working fin and then stopped. I have not taken the time to figure out why. May be a blown bulb, fuse??? I do not know. I am sure it is something very simple I encourage anyone interested to come take a look at it in person, poke & prod and take it for a short ride. The "Special" cruiser model was introduced in 1978 and produced through 1985. The XS650 began with the 1955 Hosk SOHC 500 twin. After about 10 years of producing 500 twin, Hosk engineers designed a 650 cc twin. Later the Hosk company was acquired by Showa Corporation, and in 1960 Yamaha had bought Showa with Hosk's early design of 650 cc twin.When the Yamaha XS 650 was launched in 1968 it had one of the most advanced engines in its class of large parallel twin motorcycles. The engine and gearbox are unit construction with the crankcase split horizontally for ease of assembly whereas almost all contemporaries in its class in 1968 are either unit construction with a vertically split crankcase or pre-unit construction with separate engine and gearbox. The XS650's engine was used in AMA Professional Dirt Track Racing by national champion Kenny Roberts.
