2012 Harley-Davidson Scrambler , 2012 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SCRAMBLER Harley-Davidson riders make a lifestyle out of the road less traveled. We ll take a curvy two-lane over the interstate any day. Get us on our motorcycles, and get us on the backroads. But when the pavement ends, do we turn around? Screw that. Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson sits in the middle of the greatest riding on Earth, and we aren t going to let gravel and dirt bully us into going home. So we built a bike for the road less traveled; we built a 1200cc Scrambler. And we liked it so much, we built more. The Scrambler is not a new idea. Harley-Davidson introduced the Ironhead XL Sportster in 1957, and the following year we met off-the-road models called the XLC and the XLCH (unofficially, the CH was known as Competition Hot ). As an early H-D advertisement says, They re yours for the rough stuff! In 1959, the XLCH became a fully street legal Sportster as well, fifty-five years before we built our first Scrambler at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson. Of course, technology has changed over the last half-century. Our Scramblers have 1200cc engines with Stage 1 upgrades, and we ve used several different Sportster models as our platform. We use 15 shocks and longer damper tubes in the front, so those potholes and gravel washboards don t beat us to death. Most of our Scramblers have been converted to chain drive, so we don t have to stop and cuss the broken stick that cut our drive belt. Skid plates protect our bikes from the bigger stuff we decide to run over. Custom seats, pegs, bars, and grips complement the design while improving the ride, as well. And we ve finished these Scramblers with custom paint and decals. Really, there s no end to the possibilities on our Scrambler builds, much like there s no end to the road less traveled. And that has made all the difference
