It has been a cherished display piece at a Los Angeles jewelers studio, only travelling 645 miles since restoration. There is extensive documentation with the bike. Bob, of Elco Welding fame, discovered the bike languishing at the nearby studio recently. He wiped it down, changed the fluids, and the bike fired with a couple firm kicks! The bike has been test ridden extensively, it starts reliably, idles nicely, and pulls strongly through the gears. Everything works, the bike is in excellent condition. The only noticeable flaw is some clouding of the clear coat on the gas tank. This should buff out.The bike has a current California registration and title, and is ready to enjoy.Will gladly assist with all aspects of shipping. About Me | See my other items | Email A Friend Description of [1964 BMW R27 Dover White Thumper for sale] For sale or trade vintage survivor, everyday runner, 1964 BMW R27 "Thumper". This model with triple matching vin# and in Dover White color is getting constantly rare and is believed to be one of the best vintage single cylinder machine produced by the BMW. This numbers matching, cosmetically original ( still has pinstriper initial under the tank), totally mechanically serviced, and sound BMW R27 clocks only 9K miles. This cycle has recently had top end re-sealed with new gaskets and seals. It starts easily and runs great. Motorcycle is a survivor quite cosmetically challenged condition as it has never been restored in any way except some touch-ups here and there. Matching triple serial numbers, original Dover White paint, Denfeld Dual seats and more......... This particular example is beautiful with many additions a real BMW enthusiast will appreciate. Ride as is or restore to pristine condition. Some history of the above mentioned motorcycle: "The BMW R 27 was manufactured on Sept. 1st of 1964 and was delivered to Butler & Smith in New York on the 21st of December 1964. The bike was equipped with a bench seat." "Based largely on the R26, in 1960 the R27 added rubber mounts for the engine and boosted power to 18 hp (13 kW). The R27's 250 cc vertical single was the only rubber-mounted thumper engine BMW ever produced, and was their last shaft drive single-cylinder motorcycle. The engine pumped out 18 hp (13 kW), the highest ever for a shaft-drive BMW single. BMW manufactured 15,364 R27 models (engine numbers 372 001 -- 387 566 ) over the production years of 1960 to 1966. Some of the 1966 R27 models were sold as 1967 models because dealers in those years often would assign dates to BMW motorcycles when they sold them, and not necessarily when they were manufactured. The vast majority of R27 motorcycles exported to the United States by BMW were black with white pinstriping. A few, however, were brought in by importer Butler & Smith in a color called Dover white, with black pinstriping. Why "Dover white?" Butler & Smith head honcho, Michael Bondy, had a 1942 Packard automobile in an off-white color called dover white. Bondy sent a sample of this color to BMW AG in Munich and asked that it be duplicated. BMW did copy the color, and Bondy ordered fifty motorcycles in that color. Today, BMW motorcycles in original dover white are a sought-after rarity. BMW did things differently from other manufacturers. This is evident in the R27. Its enclosed shaft final drive is rare for a single cylinder motorcycle. But it also had a triangulated Earles front fork (named after English designer Ernest Earles); so the motorcycle had a front swingarm as well as a rear swingarm. When you squeezed the front brake lever hard not only did the front end not dive, it actually rose slightly. Thus, braking was a very steady activity, though the brakes were weak by today's standards. The engines crankshaft was laid out fore-to-aft, not side- to-side; also a rare feature. This way, the crank and the final shaft were in line, and drive forces did not have to be run through a set of 90-degree gears. Also, the kick starter swung out sideways instead of parallel to the frame, so kick starting an R27 is a rather easy and danger-free affair." This is a Norton ES2 1951 British Motorcycle - first produced in 1927. It was a long stroke single, always 79mm x 100mm bore and stroke, originally launched as a sport bike but throughout its long life it was gradually overtaken by more powerful models. It remained popular due to its reliability and ease of maintenance, as well as the traditional design. From 1947 the ES2 had an innovative hydraulically damped telescopic front fork and race developed rear plunger suspension. Here is a very original and to the most part unrestored example of the famous Norton 500cc sporting single, the ES2. This old thumper starts easily and sounds great. It is an old unrestored bike and the engine probably hasn’t been touched for years but it sounds OK. It really is a pleasure to ride this big old single. It pulls like a train through all the gears and whilst it doesn’t accelerate like a big twin, it more than makes up for it in character and charm Just as you see in the photographs. This plated ATK flat tracker is the genuine article, not an overweight, underpowered wannabe like most so-called street trackers. It is powered by the 600cc Rotax single, which is tuned for performance but still streetable. The front brake and electric start are factory options, the custom sidestand (attached to existing bolt holes, no modifications to frame), mirror and the Mychron3 Plus speedometer/digital data analyzer (originally designed for cart racing, cost $500 new) are aftermarket add-ons to make street legal. This bike weighs 280 lbs and will turn inside of anything on two wheels. Recent work includes a new top end, cam drive belt, exhaust plating, and a new rear tire. Mileage is an estimate, it had no instrumentation when I purchased it. Mileage on new top end is approximately 400, rear tire has about 100, though that figure rises every weekend. Just changed the oil so it is broken in and ready to go. This bike has top level components and handles better than any other bike I have ever ridden. The air cooled 600cc single is simple and bullet proof, and delivers stump pulling power from idle. The fat gumball tires have incredible grip, the suspension is top notch, as are the brakes. Super-motos can be nervous at speed due to small wheels and long suspensions, but the gyroscopic effect of larger wheels on flat trackers make them stable at speed, and the proper suspension keeps them planted. The front end is rock solid yet supple, and has adjustable rake, from steep to even steeper. The ergos are comfortably upright, I shaved the seat foam flat as the original profile had a wedgie effect. I ride with a sheepskin pad (removed for photos) for additional comfort. It does vibrate a bit, it is after all, a thumper. Bike is ready to ride and available for viewing in the Orlando area.
