Bought this to make another Cafe Racer out of. I only ride Cafe Baggers, due to a broken back (yeah, from riding a Cafe Racer!)This bike will take more time and money than I have to give to it. There is lots of rust, and how many "little things" are missing,I couldn't tell you. So understand in advance you are getting FULL DISCLOSURE. I have not tried to turn over the motor, as ithas no kick starter. You could add that, along with keeping the original electric start, with an aftermarket side cover, designedto allow this. I have NO IDEA of the condition of the motor/transmission, or anything else. The bike was Harley's answer to the Cafe Racer craze that most people didn't adopt, but dreamed that they could do. I stillam racing after 45 years of it! We have a "5-Day Road Race" every year. Gone over the Sierras with my '02 XL on it. Camping inthe snow. And I don't even consider myself "Hard Core". Bikes are meant to be ridden, and rode hard. I haven't gotten around tothis one, so off it goes. This is certainly a PROJECT. It is very much a "Niche Market" motorcycle. Not many people know what this is. They onlymade a few of them, and only for 1977-1978. It is basically an Iron Head Sportster with clipon-type bars and rearsets. Theyare just not far back enough for me. I need to lay down. My normal pegs are about 6 to 8 inches aft of the Passenger Pegson my other Harley. And that's with the Drag Bars 4 to 6 inches Forward of their normal location. Clip-ons wouldn't work onthe XL, due to that necessity. This bike is REGISTERED TO ME, so you will have to TAKE OWNERSHIP by showing me your Drivers License so that I can transfer it through the DMV. I will no longer be responsible for parking tickets for this vehicle. NO EXCEPTIONS! I live in Santa Barbara, California. I am in no mood to try to ship a motorcycle, so you would need to pick it up. If youpay in advance, I could drive it in the back of my pickup to you for $1 a mile (don't forget, I have to come back). NOARGUMENTS ABOUT THAT! (If you can't afford a dollar a mile, just come get it yourself). That would mean the Los Angelesarea would cost you $100 to $140. You would, also have to BE HOME for me to drop it off, or I would turn around andyou would still pay for the trip. The bike is fairly priced, but you can ship me a slightly lesser offer. Just don't expect a reply to low-balling. I will not takenonsense from anyone. I am seriously tired of the gamers and the scammers. I don't have the time to answer all of the goofygames people are fond of playing. So if you don't get a reply to your silly-assed low-ball scam, know that I don't want to dealwith you as a result of your attitude and conduct. Please just show some class and leave your games at home.

1978 Harley Davidson XLCR Café Racer. Collector’s bike. $15,000.00 Selling my classic cafe racer Harley. It’s all stock with original paint. I am the second owner of this collector’s bike with its 12,360 original miles. I purchased the bike with around 12,200 miles 20 years ago and it’s been in climate controlled storage for those 20 years. Bike has updated tire on back and original Good-Year A/T tire on front. I have original rear Good-Year Eagle A/T which goes with bike. This XLCR bike is a limited edition of only 3133 produced and 1978 was the second (only 1201 manufactured) year of production. Also offered is an extra/new original Siamese dual exhaust system. Please review the pictures and research this bike on the web if you are seeking additional technical information on this model. The Café Racer concept was dreamt up by Harley design chief Willie G. Davidson, and he took the idea to the limit. Almost every part of the bike was pure black: the bikini fairing, the fuel tank, the tapered flat-track style seat unit, the side panels and mudguards, the frame, the exhaust system and most of the big 45-degree V-twin engine itself. The effect was stunning, and unlike anything Harley had done before. I am selling this bike (and my 1980 Honda CBX SuperSport with 2,929 miles and my 1973 Triumph TR5T Trophy Trail with 1656 miles) to restore my 1958 Corvette. Cycle is being sold “as is, where is” with no warranty unless written by seller. PayPal or cash payments only. Bike is located in Jacksonville, FL and shipping is buyer’s responsibility and costs. Seller will transfer title upon receipt of full funds.

I'm listing this machine for a good friend who's not very computer savvy... A visually stunning machine with performance to back up the looks. When Dennis Stemp, Editor of Iron Works Magazine decided to build and document a project bike over the course of a number of issues of his earlier Iron Trader News magazine, he chose to enhance an XLCR with the dramatic performance of a factory XR1000 engine. Dennis went a step further by sending the heads off to noted HD tuner Gerry Branch for race-spec Stage II porting, Branch's tapered intakes for use with Mikuni 39.5 flat slides, Andrews #2 cams, Screaming Eagle Ignition module and coil, and VW oil filter. Extensive frame mods were required to shoe-horn this new engine into the CR chassis. Additional mods include an indent in the tank to clear the rear carb and the following:Lockhart oil coolerDunlopads in the front calipersProgressive front fork kitWorks Performance shocks Bandit clutchCR Shift plate Included in the documentation are Branch's build notes, original flow results and dyno pulls, wiring diagrams, an original IronTrader April 1993 featuring the machine and copies of the original build articles as published in Iron Trader News . The motor was originally built with 11.5:1 pistons and developed 92RWHP @ 6,800rpm, but Dennis had the motor redone with 9:1 pistons to make the machine more civilized and practical for street use. The IronWorks artcle is on my Flickr page and it's important to note that in the carburation issues mentioned in the article were subsequently addressed by Stemp. The machine is now much easier to start, the low speed transition improved and the bike will "idle all day". The current owner acquired the machine in '99 and soon after, a factory stainless exhaust system with Genco mufflers was swapped in to replace the original carbon-steel system. He put a few hundred exciting and enjoyable miles on the bike and pronounced it a "a very strong runner". The machine was subsequently prepped for storage and put on display in his collection in a climate-controlled environment. The speedo shows 3,558 miles, but this is not the actual mileage on the machine. It's estimated that Stemp may have logged around 700 miles on the machine after the project was completed - and the current owner then logged under 300 miles before retiring the machine to display in his collection. Detailed, hi-resolution pics and scans of the April '93 issue of IronWorks featuring this cool piece of history are on my Flickr page. The pictures taken of the bike on the lawn were taken not long after the machine was acquired - the ones taken on the driveway were shot this month. The machine is located in Whitby, Ontario, Canada (just east of Toronto). 1977 HARLEY-DAVIDSON XLCR CAFE RACER IRONHEAD SPORTSTER, Harley XLCR Café RacerThe Harley-Davidson XLCR was Willie G. Davidson's one and only brush with the cafe racer set, and it created a classic for all time Harley-Davidson XLCR 1977 cafe racer classic motorcycle sportster ironhead amf Heres a classic if there ever was one, designed by wille g davidson as a playtoy for himself, someone caught a glimpse of it in the background of a picture, the public went wild & demanded one.... they put them in production a few years later, classic style coffin gas tank, xr750 style rear tail, racer type shield, saw the article on this bike in the 1977 cycleworld, instantly fell in love, had to have one, first harley I ever had at 16 years old.....this one is all original down to the factory goodyear eagle a/t rwl tires.... has the early mufflers (ones that were recalled) most desireable.....got it off the original owners son in law....just a classic.... dont think these will ever do anything but appriciate, kind of a work of art!!!Years produced: 1977-1978Total production: 1,923Claimed power: 61bhp @ 6,200rpmTop speed: 110mphEngine type: 998cc, two-valve, 45-degree V-twin Weight: 234kg (515lb) wet The city streets were thick with traffic, but it was still a memorable ride. With deceptive speed, the slim, black Harley-Davidson XLCR carved a swath through the miles of slow-moving metal. The slightest twist of the throttle sent the torquey V-twin stomping effortlessly forward. Everywhere the menacing black Harley XLCR Café Racer went, its booming bass exhaust note cleared cars from its path, turned pedestrians’ heads and threatened to turn buildings to rubble.Magical stuff — and I wasn’t even riding the Harley, just following behind on a modern Honda while the XLCR’s owner led the way through his neighborhood with practiced ease. Even before I got to ride it, the original Harley-Davidson Café Racer had charmed me with its unique style and presence. But if that’s the V-twin’s great strength, then it’s also the Hog’s fatal flaw. For if ever a motorcycle was built for image rather than performance, this is the one.Read about Tony Long's experience of riding and owning a Harley XLCR Café Racer Form over functionThat was not quite what was intended when the Harley-Davidson XLCR — pronounced 'Excelsior,' one awe-struck tester commented — was launched in 1977.
