Announced for the 1981 season, the R80G/S was both revolutionary and something of a parts-bin special. It used the road-bike 800cc R80/7 engine in a modified R65 frame. Revolutionary, though, was the rear suspension, which introduced BMW’s now famous concept of the shaft drive housing forming a single-sided swingarm. The payback for using the Monolever unit, as BMW named it, was extra torsional rigidity and lower weight. The G/S was a tall bike with good ground clearance, motocross-style handlebars and long suspension travel. The full-size adventure tourer was born. Classic bike with great reliabilty.

I’m the second owner and have owned the bike since 2000. The bike has been in one accident in 2005. Everything was assessed by Marin BMW and all damaged parts replaced. I have the full records.Overall the bike has been very reliable, taking me through the Feather River canyon and to Death Valley on many occasions. It’s a nice mixture of a classic BMW engine and relatively more modern brakes and suspension. I have some hard shell cases and a tank bag included along with a Corbin seat.The bike needs a new owner with more time than I currently have to enjoy it and provide a little tlc.More info-Transmission was rebuilt by Recommended Service in 2012 and I’ve only put a couple hundred miles on it since-I replaced the timing advance unit around the same time-The heads have dual spark plugs using a Dyna ignition booster-Engine was overhauled by San Jose BMW with head reconditioning, new pistons (higher compression), valves, and higher performance camshaft-Much of the electrical systems has been renewed including the diode board and alternator-The Muffler is a non-stock Remus-The crash guards and side stand are missing, I bought the bike this way and only use the center stand-The disk brakes have been recently renewed with new seals, pistons, master cylinder, pads and a stainless brake line-The rotors rattle a lot, this is considered “normal” but they need to be replaced for it to quiet down. This BMW R100RS is such a great airhead, possibly the finest I've owned. Prior to my ownership, it was in one family since new. It's received a few very desirable upgrades along the way, notably, the period correct Supertrapp mufflers, lightweight starter electronic ignition and British Police style solo seat. The mufflers are not loud but have a notable tone that hints that their's some power lurking in there. The motorcycle has been fully serviced and is ready to ride, everything works as it should and I would not hesitate sending someone off across the country. Most recent tasks completed include, Valve adjustment fully rebuilt carbs, including new diaphragms - this bike has the very desirable Bing 40s, the largest available, carbs have been sync'd and tuned gas tank has been cleaned out petcocks rebuilt all fluids changed new AGM sealed battery This has to be the most desirable spec for an airhead, dual disks on the front and one on the rear and brembo calipers all round. It's in all round superb condition, registered and insured and currently on the road in daily use. I can ship the bike anywhere in the country for $500. Any inspection welcome. I'd like to be paid in cash, alternatively I'll accept a cashiers check.
