While cleaning out the back yard I ran across these two guys. Meet Hans and Franz. For sake of simplicity I will call them RTP1 (Hans) and RTP2 (Franz). Consider this to be a two for one deal. Both run great but I've been so busy with work and joy that is owning a 1898 Victorian that I almost never get a chance to exercise them. Purchased both directly from the CHP after they were retired from the force. I purchased RTP1 about a year and ½ ago. It’s the one that gets ridden. Bought RTP2 6 months ago mostly for the spare part factor since it appears that the CHP is now fresh out of these BWM motors since they switched to Kawasaki for a brief period and now Harleys. RTP1 runs strong. 2004 with 155, 664 miles. No surge. Shifts great, clutch is solid and is an all-around wonderful bike. The only negative is there is a pulsation when you brake real hard with the front brake lever. Under normal use it’s not noticeable. Cosmetically it’s a 6 or 7 out of 10 I have not parted out RTP2 so is still in one piece. I did put a few miles on it and it seemed to run good. However, being a 2002 it has a bit of a surge at light throttle. Pretty much a known issue on any of these oilheads prior to 2004 when BMW went to 2 spark plug heads (which RTP1 has). The surging can be minimized by syncing the throttle bodies. The clutch in RTP2 is a bit tired as well. Not quite as good cosmetically. Perhaps a 4 or 5 out of 10. 170,473 miles but everyone I’ve talked to has told me these will go 250K without an overhaul. These bikes have power ABS brakes (system works great on both bikes, no codes, etc), heated grips, power adjustable windscreen, larger alternator then the regular RT and cooling fans for the oil cooler that is only offered on the RTP. They were about $20K new and the build quality speaks to that. The other cool thing about these bikes is that they have a feature I refer to as “reverse camouflage”. Folks don’t see motorcycles but they see these. They get out of the carpool lane if they don’t belong. They put on their seatbelts. I’ve even had CHP officers that had someone pulled over wave at me like I was one of their own. Shouldn’t admit it but one of those times I was going way over the limit. I’m pretty sure with any other vehicle I would have been doing some explaining. CHP maintained these bikes as per the BWM maintenance schedule. According to the local BMW Dealer RTP1 would have gotten a major service including an alternator belt right before I got it. It makes sense since I noticed fresh tamper paint on the drain and fill plugs for the trans and diff. All of the bolts on the brake rot
