Yamaha designed the high-performance XJ550 as a four-cylinder with chain drive, and built it specifically as a special cruiser. Cycle magazine said in 1982 "After the wide proliferation of special styling, it's easy to forget what a landmark bike the Maxim is...The 550 was striking, controversial, sensational, and wildly successful in showrooms.
