The Commander stands out in a sea of motorcycles , especially in this Crimson Red and Lava Red two-tone paint . The Thunderbird Commander combines cruiser styling with a strong engine , refined chassis and a broad riding position , without compromising any of the values to run in this premier cruiser class . For a bike of this size , the Commander is very agile and well balanced . I couldn't believe how well it turns , even at slow speeds . The frame geometry and its low center of gravity make it steer easily , all the while keeping a low 27.5 inch seat height for additional manageability . The wide tires also help give this Triumph a neutral and light feel . The Commander runs a good looking set of 5-spoke , 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels , with a wide 140mm front and a healthy 200mm rear tire . Showa suspension handles the ride quite nicely . Get a big handful of throttle on the Commander and this motor pulls so smooth and strong , with no effort . After all , it is the largest parallel-twin cylinder powerplant in the motorcycle industry . The 1699 cc twin is liquid-cooled and fuel injected , and with its double overhead camshafts and a crankshaft with a 270 degree firing order , the Commander has nice authentic cruiser character . This motor pumps out 93 hp and an impressive 111 ft. lbs. of torque . The transmission is smooth and responsive through all 6 gears , and the belt final drive strong and vitually maintenance free . The brakes on the Commander 1700 are impressive too . Dual four-pot Nissin calipers on 310 mm discs up front and a single Brembo caliper on a 310 mm rear disc handle the stopping duties of this 727 pound machine . Combine that with the latest generation ABS from Triumph and it is more than sufficient braking power . The Commander sits upright and the seats are very comfortable . The rider floorboards with a heel/toe shifter provide additional comfort and let you relax on a longer days ride . Lots of chrome and polished aluminum add to the look of the Commander , and i love the dual headlights too . The fit and finish on this bike is impeccable . Trying to combine the road worthiness and touring abilities of a whole slew of competitors like BMW GTL's and R1200RT's , Honda ST 1300's , Yamaha FJR 1300's and even Gold Wings and H-D Ultra's , Triumph designed a machine to do it all . A very capable superslab highway distance machine that has the ability to rip up the twisties and feels lighter than scales would tell you . At 662 pounds without bags , the Trophy SE feels very agile and nimble . The engineers at Triumph have this bike set up with linked ABS brakes , traction control , cruise control , tire pressure monitors , electrically adjustable windshield , and 31 - liter saddlebags , They also went with electronically adjustable suspension for a smooth , good handling ride .
