This listing is for the commissioned build of chassis #004 of the Frankfurt Flyer. The Frankfurt Flyer started as a dream of hammering out my own aluminum bodied sports racer similar to the post war speed enthusiasts of Germany. In 2012 I completed my first car and since have built 3 more of this design for fellow speed enthusiasts. Please understand this listing is for an unbuilt car because nearly every detail is bespoke to your personal taste, literally hand built. The delivery time takes 10 months from initiation. History: THE EARLY DAYS Shortly after WWII in war-torn Germany, a small group of speed enthusiasts emerged from tool rooms and barns sporting lightweight aluminum bodied race cars across the German countryside. These cars were purpose built with one goal in mind, speed. The cars shared common underpinnings most often in the form of scrap Volkswagen and aircraft pieces from the left over military vehicles. Early day "Privateers" such as Petermax Muller and Huscke von Hanstein traded scarce food supplies with Wolfsburg engineers for modified Porsche and VW parts to build the Petermax Muller Special. The Muller Special was built on a Kubelwagen chassis with Schwimmwagen front suspension and highly modified Vogelsang heads. The car went on to win and set records in the first Postwar days of racing. Other "Eigenbau" (translated Home-built) Aluminum bodied specials included Kurt Kuhnke's VW beetle based racer and the sleek Rometsch Porsche. One racing special made a name for itself, that was Walter Glockler's VW "Eigenbau." After the war, Glockler had opened his Frankfurt VW Dealership and had a long standing interest in motorsport. He appointed the ingenious race engineer Hermann Ramelow to build his chassis and coachbuilder C.H. Weidenhausen to wrap the car in its beautiful aluminum skin. The car began wearing a VW badge but in a short time, Porsche had approached Glockler pressuring him to put the Porsche name on his car in exchange for Porsche parts. The deal was done and the Glockler Porsche was born. Glockler went on to build several variations of his Porsche Specials, all bodied by C.H. Weidenhausen, eventually the car would give birth to the Porsche 550 Spyder. The Frankfurt Flyer Shown in the following photos is #FF003, the third of the "Frankfurt Flyer" series. I teamed up with longtime VW/Porsche builder Chuck Beck who developed the steel Tubular frame chassis and VW based fully adjustable suspension. The engine was built by Landspeed record holder and Porsche/VW engine expert Tom Bruch for this car. The case comes from a 1958 VW 36HP engine. Tom took a counterweighted Porsche 912 Crankshaft and modified it to fit the VW main bearings, increasing the stroke from 64MM to 74MM. Tom also installed an ISKY 2J camshaft. This is the very cam that was given to him from Ed Iskenderian in 1966 and which he later set a landspeed record with in 1967. Tom used Wolfsburg West Dual port heads and dual carbs to obtain healthy airflow for a total output of 85HP. The car weighs in at 1,250LBS. Single Cockpit with lightweight aluminum tonneau and wrap around windscreen. With Tonneau Removed, the car is a 2 seater with "Double Bubble" windscreen. Under the hand shaped aluminum skin is a "Superleggera" type tubular buck. I form all tubing by hand as a guide for the final panel work. Fabricating the Gauge bezel Skinning out interior and outer panels, A wonderful little machine starts to take shape. And finally a functional and sensational driving lightweight sports car. Attaches to front beam. This buggy was originally built in the late 60's. It is an original "Manx style" Spoiler body, offered by Desert Fox and Sandwinder. I bought it in 2008. It was such a cool little buggy but needed some updating. I decided to tear it down and rebuild it as a street driven show car with a strong nod to wild 60's dune buggies and show rods. I wanted to try to use as much of the original build as possible, keeping the "survivor" feel and character that it had. I did not replace the pan, but did clean it up and paint it. The drive components, trans, and suspension have been gone through to make sure it is a turnkey runner, starts up every time, and is safe on the streets. The entire car was rewired with a new harness, fittings, fusebox. The body was the focus of the build, with a full metal flake finish(over a pound of flake) with candy teal panel work and custom hand lettering and pinstriping to top it all off. I removed the seats and body for a complete pearl white diamond tuck makeover, replacing the pan/body gasket with a brand new one upon reassembly. Also installed brand new windshield frame, glass, and rubber. For more details on the entire build you can go to my build thread on the Samba. Lot of progress pics and many details there. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=477020 The Boulevard Buggy is an award winner and international magazine feature car, built for street and show. Won many “Best Paint” awards. Also won "1st In Class" and “Promoter’s Choice” awards at Bugorama in Fontana. It's been featured in various publications including full editorials in Ultra VW Magazine, VW Speed, Gasoline Magazine, Kustom World. And possibly the coolest feature in the renowned "Dune Buggy Handbook". This little Boulevard Buggy has garnered a lot of attention. If you’re looking for a turnkey, one of a kind custom car that’s a blast to drive and turns heads wherever it goes…this is the one for you! All the hard work has been done on this buggy. It’s in great condition and runs great. Minor improvements would make this the perfect car. If I were to keep it, I'd maybe upgrade to a new dual master cylinder and upgrade the pedal assembly to one of those fancy rollers. :) The dash is purposefully minimal, but can be easily upgraded with more bells and whistles. Original bug speedo needle doesn't work, but the battery/ignition lights in the gauge are wired and work fine. The one thing that needs to be replaced is the e-brake handle. I never got around to doing it, but its never been a major issue for me. These are little details that do not affect the drivability or fun factor of this car and would be easy for a new owner. This has been the coolest car to build, own, and drive. Definitely one of a kind. I have more invested than the asking price. But all reasonable offers will be considered. The car is located in the Antelope Valley(Northern Los Angeles County). I'm willing to work with the buyer to ship anywhere, at buyer's expense of course. If you live in Southern California or Phoenix, AZ we can easily arrange personal delivery for a reasonable fee. There is an immediate deposit of $500 via Paypal required. The balance is to be paid within 7 days. Accepted methods of payments for the balance are cash or a cashier's check from a United States bank. Due to high paypal fees, the final payment balance (minus deposit) can not be made through Paypal. Please send an eBay message upon completion of eBay transaction. I like communication and will respond to all eBay messages. Thanks for looking! vw volkswagen manx spoiler dune buggy custom kustom hotrod showrod volksrod lowrider traditional
