1984 Avanti II Black w/ Running GM V8 Small Block & Tan Leather Interior VIN: 12AAV1231E1004010 I bought this 1984 Avanti II from my Grandfather earlier this year. He has owned it since the 1990s and had it repainted sometime in the late 1990s over the original black and it was enough of a low-end job that it did not last and has extensive oxidation and loss to the clear coat. So while this car runs it does need work and will need a full strip, glass work, and repaint when the mechanicals are fixed. I wanted to take this on but don't have the funds to do so. It was in storage and not driven much over the last 4-5 years after we moved him into an assisted living home and was garaged for most of that time. There are extensive paint issues as I said, but it has not been in any accidents to my knowledge. With my limited knowledge of fiberglass, I think it is in generally good shape but I will call out everything I can for you to judge for yourself. The "hog troughs" seem fine but I wasn't able to photograph them. Let me know what you want to see and I can get more images up. Starting on the drivers side rear and going clockwise- Driver's side:-Paint worn through to fiberglass under gas tank door-Extensive oxidation and clear coat damage as shown-Chips to edge of driver's side door-Cracks in fiberglass under the door (shown)-Door needs adjustment-Driver's power window not operating (I believe the motor needs replace or rebuilt)-Front Drivers Fender reflector missing Front:-Bumper has lots of paint cracks but should be restorable as is when repainted-Separation in fibreglass where turn indicators were on the original 63-64 Avanti but are glassed over in a 1984-Hood oxidized and needs adjusted as it hits the body in the front at the hinge (where there is fiberglass damage from this fact) Passenger side:-Deep scratch down to fiberglass towards front edge of passenger door extending to fender-Paint missing to fiberglass above hood-Paint missing to fiberglass on rear fender edge and above trunk Rear End:-Bumper has lots of paint cracks with signs of an impact with a pole but should be restorable as is when repainted-Trunk is electric and while it works, it gets stuck on occasion-Cracks to paint in bumper-Extensive oxidation and clear coat damage as shown Roof:-Heavy oxidation and clear coat loss-Sunroof opens but with difficulty due to leather cover on inside warping and causing friction Interior:-Extensive cracking to lacquer on wood dash elements-Leather in good shape, drivers seat has been completely redone in matching leather-Passenger seat side bolsters redone where they was worn-Plastic lens on Automatic shifter is cracked-Some warping to leather components like change pocket in center and above radio-Original Blaupunkt AM/FM cassette & Speakers (not working but prob just needs a fuse)-Carpet in decent shape Chromed Steel Wire Wheels:-All 4 with rust-Tires in fine shape but 20 years old and will need replaced Mechanical:-A/C needs recharged but fan blows and should work-Some seals needed, potentially rear end seal (?)-Engine needs general tune up-Transmission shifts smoothly-Brakes seem fine The mechanics are what I know the least about. Like I said above, this runs and gets down the highway (taken it up to 80 a couple of times). I'm looking to just get this to someone who can get it to up where it deserves to be. This 1963 Studebaker Avanti is an excellent, rust free survivor original, with 289 V-8, Power windows, Power disc brakes, and good California history going back to the 1980's, when the former owner, Charles Mylor owned it. The Vault Classic Cars dealership recently purchased it from the estate, and got it up, running and driving ! . Here is a video of the car as it is now, in action and operating! The car had been sitting, barn find style, in the former owner's driveway. We rescued it, and performed the necessary CPR. It Lives ! . It's all stock and authentic, with the Studebaker 289 R-1 V-8, Borg Warner automatic transmission, and Power steering, Power front disc brakes, Power windows, and full instrumentation including Tachometer. And a brand new Strato-View rear view mirror on the fender! . Excellent fiberglass, solid hog-troughs and frame. Good original chrome and stainless. . Brand new dual exhausts from manifold to exhaust tip. Brand new 15 inch whitewall tires. Current title, plate and registration with no back fees. . The brilliance of using fiberglass was the ability to make curves and surfaces that couldn't be done with steel. When you look at other 1963 automobiles, they're basically square boxes with some texturing / styling on the sides. The AVANTI, on the other hand, was curvy everywhere, and it was beautiful viewed from any angle ! . The original '63/64 Studebaker Avanti's had a rakish stance. The later ones, the Avanti II's and later, had to make room for the increased height of the Chevrolet Engine, so they just don't look right! . No Chevrolet here! This is the stock and original Studebaker 289 V-8, Running good ! Note the ignition shielding. I have the spark plug shields and they're included with the car but they're not installed right now. . The original interior ! It's held up pretty well! The carpeting is very tired, and I would think you would want to re-do the front seats, but overall amazingly good for original ! . The original back seat - clean, no rips or tears in the original Elk Vinyl. . Excellent original! I noticed that the console vinyl and the rear arm-rests appear to be died in the Elk color over Orange ( ! ) pieces. Orange was an Avanti interior color, but I don't understand why Orange would be here, in an obviously originally Elk interior. I guess I'll never know. . Nice original dash, with a couple of cracks showing. You'll also note the A/C vents. It appears the former owner was in the process of converting the car to A/C. I include the fan assembly and the console side panels with the car. There would still be quite a bit of work and parts needed to actually finish the A/C conversion. . All of those guages work properly except for the Tachometer. . . Nice original headliner, with padded "Roll Bar" . Note there's one little puncture in the headliner. . Nice Original doorpanels. . When bucket seats were really bucket seats! . Roof mounted headlight, instrument light and heater / defroster switches. Part of what makes the Avanti so cool ! . Trunk is pretty clean. When we got the car, it had a trunk mounted battery, which is now gone in favor of the correct 3EE 12 Volt "Suitcase" style battery under the hood. . Jack and jack crank in the spare tire well, and lugwrench in the special area off to the left. It is missing the spare tire and wheel. . New exhaust and solid frame! . Stock and authentic, the way it should be. . Another view of the 289 Studebaker R-1 V-8 . The right door had some unprofessional fiberglass repair. There are also 2 holes in the other door where a non-authentic mirror used to be. Other than that, the fiberglass on this car looks really good to me ! . There's the original Blue personalized plate, I'll also include the rear plate. The current plate on the car is a modern California white plate, shown in some of the other photos. . Sure it needs a paint job and some cleanup, but it's a really good, solid, easy to restore - and reasonably priced - authentic R-1 Avanti ! . Another great angle on the Avanti Styling! . Here's a bit on the Avanti Sedan pulled off Google: While Studebaker president Sherwood Egbert had envisioned a four-door sedan based on the Avanti way back in 1963, this 1990 Avanti four-door sedan currently on offer is not the result of Egbert's dream. Instead, it's the product of John J. Cafaro's brief tenure as the head of Avanti in the late 1980s. The Avanti four-door, based on a Chevrolet Caprice chassis, is the only vehicle Avanti Automotive Corp. built in 1990. This version of the car was unveiled at the Greater New York International Automobile Show in March 1989. How many cars can you truly say are rare? This is one of the rarest cars on the planet to own! The car runs and drives nicely. I wouldn't call it a show winner at this point as it has a few quirks pointed out in the photos below. It would need some light cosmetic and mechanical work to be a legitimate show winner. However, with its pure rarity and unique looks it still commands all the attention at any car show it goes to! The car's previous owner lived here in Texas, Houston to be exact. The car belonged in a collector's private collection until the car was damaged in Hurricane Ike in 2008 when the collector's garage flooded from the rain (fresh water, not salt water!!). We acquired it from the insurance company. The damage was relatively light, but we did give it a mini-restoration and went through the entire car and made sure there were no lasting effects from the water exposure. The car was always kept in a rust free environment as the body has no rust at all on it! Due to the insurance history, the car does come with a rebult-salvage Texas title which is the same as a normal clean Texas title except for the notation on the front of the title "rebuilt salvage", "flood damage". If you haven't noticed by now on classic cars like this it's not so much the title history as it is the condition of the car itself. There are plenty of rusted out cars sitting on blocks in fields that have perfectly clean titles, but what are those going to get you besides a headache? Come see this car and you'll be impressed! Some say 80 some say 90 made but in either number it's still incredibly rare! The passenger corner of the front bumper is chipped as you can see. What a unique car! The entire body is made out of fiberglass. The original paint is 25 years old now and does show some light cracks in some places under close inspection. Here on the driver side as you can see. On the bumper. Just look at this beauty! What a find! This car will capture the curiosity of anyone who is nearby! This car has no fenders. It's all one big piece of fiber glass! The body is still very straight! The 25 year old clear coat is failing in a few small places. You can see it here. Even from the rear the car still looks incredible with these unique looks you won't find anywhere else! This car had another logo back here at some point. You can see the holes that were drilled to attach them. This is the real deal! An Avanti! The body is still incredibly straight! The car has held up real nicely for being all original! Just look at these unique lines! Clear coat beginning to fail behind the rear wheel as shown here. The paint still looks great up here! It's 25 years old and isn't perfect but all in all its still nice! A small spot up here as you can see. The hood looks great! Another spot on the passenger side behind the rear door. The rubber trim on all four windows needs to be replaced. It's 25 years old and has dried and broken off in most cases. Not a hard fix. See what i mean? You can see half the rubber then the other half you can look straight into there. Wheels and tires still look great. Tires have plenty of tread but are starting to show some time related age wear. Above one wheel is some light spider webbing of the fiberglass. Clear coat cracking on and next to the mirror. If it wasn't for the clear coat and a few fiberglass cracks the exterior would be near perfect. Trunk still looks great! The carpeting is a little discolored, but all in all it's still nice! Driver's door and trim still look great! Here's your first glimpse into this original 1990 Avanti 4-Door! All original in here. Driver's seat is showing some wear expected for an original car of this age and mileage. Not too bad for 25 years old. This car hasn't been restored in any way! Power seat controls still work great! Passenger side door also looks great! You'll be pleased with all the luxury this car has to offer! They really made something special with this car! Passenger's seat is in even better condition. The leather looks great! Just look at how nice it is! Original Avanti interior! This power seat is also working great! Rear doors still look great! No scuff or kick marks to be found! Rear seat passengers have plenty of room and even have tray tables! What a luxury sedan! The tray tables retract easily! This door is also looking great! You'll be pleased with this car's all original condition! The rear seats were very seldomly sat in! They really have held up well! This car has got it all! Very unique! Rear seat passengers will really enjoy all the comfort! Only 80 of these cars exist. You won't find a rarer car out there! The driver will enjoy all the looks they get while driving! This car is a sight to behold! So will the passenger! A very comfortable ride being surrounded with leather and woodgrain! The interior still looks good. It's held up nicely for being 25 years old! The a/c and radio still work nicely! Transmission shifts great! The woodgrain still looks good. The window motors are showing their age leading to us refraining from operating them. We'd hate to send the window down only to see it not come back up when commanded. All the motors could use a good lubricating/service. Vanity mirrors. I couldn't get the lights on the mirrors to work though. The car did have an auto dimming mirror but it's permanently dimmed now due to its age. The car has had a radar detector installed in a very discreet place here. The headliner still looks great but has come down slightly on the passenger's side a the seam as you can see. Back here still looking nice! We found some promotional material for this car. It's very hard to come by. This car was really rare! Copy of a window sticker! This car had a sticker price of $48,000 in 1990. This isn't from this car but for illustration purposes. All the gauges are still working! Original mileage! The engine still shows nicely and runs very well! What's nice about this rare car is that the parts that made it are anything but rare. This car is on a Chevrolet Caprice chassis! This car can be serviced at Pep Boys or Goodyear! You don't need a special mechanic! This is the real deal! The 302 v8! Plenty of power for this Avanti! Engine is still in great shape! This 1963 Studebaker Avanti is an excellent, rust free survivor original, with 289 V-8, Power windows, Power disc brakes, and good California history going back to the 1980's, when the former owner, Charles Mylor owned it. The Vault Classic Cars dealership recently purchased it from the estate, and got it up, running and driving ! . Here is a video of the car as it is now, in action and operating! The car had been sitting, barn find style, in the former owner's driveway. We rescued it, and performed the necessary CPR. It Lives ! . It's all stock and authentic, with the Studebaker 289 R-1 V-8, Borg Warner automatic transmission, and Power steering, Power front disc brakes, Power windows, and full instrumentation including Tachometer. And a brand new Strato-View rear view mirror on the fender! . Excellent fiberglass, solid hog-troughs and frame. Good original chrome and stainless. . Brand new dual exhausts from manifold to exhaust tip. Brand new 15 inch whitewall tires. Current title, plate and registration with no back fees. . The brilliance of using fiberglass was the ability to make curves and surfaces that couldn't be done with steel. When you look at other 1963 automobiles, they're basically square boxes with some texturing / styling on the sides. The AVANTI, on the other hand, was curvy everywhere, and it was beautiful viewed from any angle ! . The original '63/64 Studebaker Avanti's had a rakish stance. The later ones, the Avanti II's and later, had to make room for the increased height of the Chevrolet Engine, so they just don't look right! . No Chevrolet here! This is the stock and original Studebaker 289 V-8, Running good ! Note the ignition shielding. I have the spark plug shields and they're included with the car but they're not installed right now. . The original interior ! It's held up pretty well! The carpeting is very tired, and I would think you would want to re-do the front seats, but overall amazingly good for original ! . The original back seat - clean, no rips or tears in the original Elk Vinyl. . Excellent original! I noticed that the console vinyl and the rear arm-rests appear to be died in the Elk color over Orange ( ! ) pieces. Orange was an Avanti interior color, but I don't understand why Orange would be here, in an obviously originally Elk interior. I guess I'll never know. . Nice original dash, with a couple of cracks showing. You'll also note the A/C vents. It appears the former owner was in the process of converting the car to A/C. I include the fan assembly and the console side panels with the car. There would still be quite a bit of work and parts needed to actually finish the A/C conversion. . All of those guages work properly except for the Tachometer. . . Nice original headliner, with padded "Roll Bar" . Note there's one little puncture in the headliner. . Nice Original doorpanels. . When bucket seats were really bucket seats! . Roof mounted headlight, instrument light and heater / defroster switches. Part of what makes the Avanti so cool ! . Trunk is pretty clean. When we got the car, it had a trunk mounted battery, which is now gone in favor of the correct 3EE 12 Volt "Suitcase" style battery under the hood. . Jack and jack crank in the spare tire well, and lugwrench in the special area off to the left. It is missing the spare tire and wheel. . New exhaust and solid frame! . Stock and authentic, the way it should be. . Another view of the 289 Studebaker R-1 V-8 . The right door had some unprofessional fiberglass repair. There are also 2 holes in the other door where a non-authentic mirror used to be. Other than that, the fiberglass on this car looks really good to me ! . There's the original Blue personalized plate, I'll also include the rear plate. The current plate on the car is a modern California white plate, shown in some of the other photos. . Sure it needs a paint job and some cleanup, but it's a really good, solid, easy to restore - and reasonably priced - authentic R-1 Avanti ! . Another great angle on the Avanti Styling! .
