The lightweight 2-stroke engine scores with unrivaled performance, wrapped into an extremely lightweight chassis - a serious competitor for the more complex 4-stroke contenders. Features May Include: TRIPLE CLAMPS Top-quality, CNC-machined triple clamps have been something of a KTM trademark. Ensuring a precise handling, they perceptibly support the flex characteristics, and with it, the fork's action. SWINGARM Designed using the latest in calculation and simulation software, the design and wall thickness of the cast aluminum swingarm have been optimized for minimum weight at optimum stiffness and precisely defined flexibility provides perfect stability at minimum weight. For 2014, the engineers have revised the chain guide to increase reliability while lowering the weight. SUSPENSION/DAMPING The rear monoshock as well as the 48mm upside-down front fork by WP Suspension guarantee the best response and damping characteristics. In 2014, the fork has more reserves against bottoming out thanks to their optimized setting. Of course, compression and rebound damping can be adjusted to the track conditions and the rider's preferences with a twist of the wrist - the rear monoshock even has separate high and low speed adjustments. AIR BOX The airbox design offers maximum protection of the air filter against soiling while ensuring maximum airflow for top performance. The Twin Air filter can be changed without tools in seconds, a standard for KTM. HANDLEBAR All SX models are fitted with the super strong, tapered Renthal Fatbar 827 whose bend is especially well suited for the requirements of motocross. The proven standard KTM mount allows to fix the handlebar in four different positions. A large Renthal crash pad in a classy combination of black and silver, offers effective crash protection for the rider. BRAKES High-Tech Brembo brakes have always been standard equipment on KTM offroad bikes. Combined with the lightweight Wave discs, they are the ultimate solution in braking technology. The SX models gain a newly-developed master cylinder with a new reservoir, a smaller piston diameter and optimized lever kinematics. Combined with optimized brake pads, this makes for another perceptible improvement of front brake performance and action. CLUTCH A new DDS clutch (Damped Diaphragm Steel) with a wear-free steel cage is fitted to the new KTM 250 SX engine, allowing use of thin steel discs for minimum overall width. TRANSMISSION In 2014, the 250 SX-F engine is distinguished by a new gear box offering easy and precise shifting. As the number of gears has been reduced from 6 to 5, the new transmission is 250g lighter than its predecessor. COUNTER BALANCE SHAFT In order to balance the mass-forces, the 250 SX-F engine uses a multifunctional counter balance shaft which also drives the water pump and timing chain. The engine receives a new water pump cover with a new gasket in order to optimize the seal. CYLINDER HEAD The centerpiece of the compact DOHC engine is its cutting-edge cylinder head with two overhead camshafts and DLC-coated followers - a design that allows to break the engine speed "sound barrier" of 14,000 rpm. Combined with extra lightweight titanium valves (intake 32.5mm, exhaust 26.5mm), flow optimized ports ensure a maximized flow rate for top performance. The standard electric start and handlebar-mounted map switch make the FC 450 one of the most advanced Motocross bikes on the market. Features May Include: ENGINE The compact SOHC design delivers exceptional power and torque over an extremely wide rev range. The accessible, class-leading performance of the FC 450 engine allows riders to confidently rocket of the corners, power down the straights and clear any jump. The single overhead cam in the cylinder head actuates four lightweight titanium valves, only 32 grams each, via lightweight and rigid rocker arms (DLC coated on the intake). The diameter of the intake valves is 38mm, while on the exhaust side it is 33mm. The broad power band of the FC 450 stretches to 11,500 rpm, peaking at 60 hp while maintaining exceptional torque low in the rev range. ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM The electronic fuel injection and 44mm throttle body of the Keihin Engine Management System on the 4-stroke models, combine to offer amazing power delivery and efficiency at all engine speeds. The injector was positioned on the bottom of the inlet tract for optimal air-fuel mixture, resulting in crisp throttle response and class-leading power. CRANKSHAFT, CONROD AND PISTON The FC 450 features an industry-leading Pankl produced crankshaft and conrod in order to ensure that the high power output and torque of the 450cc engine are combined with durability and long service intervals (100 hours before changing con rod, con rod bearing and crank pin). To achieve this goal, the lightweight crankshaft has a pressure lubricated plain big end bearing, and two force-fitted shells that run directly on the crank pin. The König bridge-box-type piston weighs 330g and has a bore of 95mm, it was developed to reduce engine vibration and optimise strength. The compression ratio is 12.6:1 for an amazing peak output of 60 hp. SWINGARM The single component construction of the aluminium swingarm eliminates welding, providing more reliability, stability and safety, as well as superior quality and consistent behaviour over time compared to other construction processes.
