I bought this R75/5 in 2008 from a BMW enthusiast out in central California's gold country. He installed an electronic ignition upgrade and had been riding it daily for years but had finally decided to move on to a bigger newer BMW. He told me it had one issue: it had been modified by removing the backrest, the rack and the tandem seat and installing a Corbin solo seat and customizing the back fender and tailights to fit with the new seat. He liked how it looked so much that he bought it. After he had owned it for a couple of years, he decided it was time to replace the battery, which was no longer holding a charge very well. He then discovered that one of the modifications the former owner had done to support the solo seat involved welding the back of the frame in such a way that the giant battery was totally trapped in the frame! It was then that he decided to sell i the bike, rather than take it apart just to change the battery. Foolishly, just as he had done years earlier, I bought it from him even after hearing this sad tale because it looked so cool and ran so well. I kept it on a trickle charger all the time, but that battery was on its deathbed. It was running great other than the battery issue when I stopped riding it in 2009. I undid the rear wheel and took that old battery out. It still needs a new battery put in and all those bolts tightened up. It has 49,622 miles on it. The gas lines have deteriorated and should be replaced, and the tires are flat. The pigeons decorated it for a few months, until I covered it. It is covered with mud, but underneath the dirt the paint is still pretty good It has been sitting in my side alley since 2010. There is one ding in the gas tank. It is complete, except for the original seat , which I never had, and the title is clear and in my name. Get this vintage relic back on the road, all it needs is a battery, a good scrubbing and some basic TLC!
