Engine 847 cc liquid-cooled, in-line 3-cylinder, DOHC, 12-valve engine with fuel injection. This engine combines advanced high tech components including YCC-T and Yamaha D-Mode, with a crossplane crankshaft concept to deliver an exciting, torquey and quick-revving engine character. This 3-cylinder engine features Yamaha’s “Crossplane Crankshaft Concept” that provides linear torque development in response to the rider’s throttle input. The ride-by-wire Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) system senses the slightest throttle input by the rider, relays the data to the ECU which sends commands to a servo-motor actuator controlling the intake airflow volume. The FJ-09 is equipped with Yamaha D-MODE (or “Drive Mode”) variable throttle control system. The rider can choose at will from three throttle valve control maps (Standard Mode, “A” Mode, and “B” Mode) for different performance characteristics. Traction Control System (TCS) helps ensure smooth starts even on wet road surfaces or unpaved roads. The system detects rear wheel spin and reacts though combined control of the ignition timing, fuel injection volume and throttle opening (YCC-T). Chassis / Suspension For excellent damping characteristics, the front suspension is an inverted fork with 41 mm inner tubes with 5.4 inches of travel. The front suspension features adjustment for spring preload and rebound damping. The rear suspension features a linked-type Monocross® shock. The shock is positioned below the seat and features an almost horizontal alignment. This unique positioning contributes to mass centralization and a slimmer body design. The rear suspension is also adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping. Front brakes consist of two floating 298 mm discs with 4-pot opposed piston calipers. The calipers are radial mounted. Large 4.8 gallon fuel tank with 44 miles per gallon* means less-frequent stops for fuel when on the open road. Lightweight Controlled-Fill die cast aluminum swingarm is used to reduce weight. The throttle body is redesigned, and the shape of the funnel and the shape and length of the exhaust pipe have been changed to use the YCC-T system. The Yamaha D-Mode system offers riders a choice of T-Mode or S-Mode. T-Mode provides good performance characteristics needed for touring. The S-mode maximizes the performance characteristics for a sportier ride. Cruise control adjusts speed via a single push to the switch or, for larger adjustments, by continuously pushing the switch. Application of the brakes, clutch or throttle automatically releases the cruise control function. There is also a “resume” function that returns the cruise control to the most recent setting. Four-into-one-into-two stainless-steel exhaust optimizes engine performance across the powerband. Chassis / Suspension Sharp-looking bodywork and air-management system keep the bike and rider cool; a central vent beneath the instrument panel cools the rider and reduces negative pressure for less buffeting, and fairing side panels with tool-less adjustability let the rider direct airflow. The fork design incorporates an aluminum piston rod and plunger and features a spring rate. Rear shock damping and spring rate are revised for rider comfort, especially when riding with a passenger and/or rear cargo for a sportier ride. With four pre-load settings, three damping adjustments and an additional seven damping fine-tuning adjustments, the Super Ténéré ES suspension can be dialed perfectly to meet the needs of the rider, passenger and the amount of cargo and terrain. Wide-ratio 6-speed transmission has the right gear, whether on the open highway or off-road. Twin downdraft throttle body fuel injection with YCC-T® (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) delivers optimum throttle control and acceleration. Two-position “D-Mode” (Drive Mode) throttle response mapping for rider preference. Traction control lets the rider get on the gas with more confidence. This very advanced system regulates ignition timing, fuel injection and throttle valve opening based on wheel spin, providing a smooth response that is not abrupt like the competitors. Three modes available to match rider preference, including off. Super Ténéré ES has both an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Unified Braking System (UBS). With UBS, squeezing the front brake alone also provides some rear-wheel braking; pressing the rear brake first overrides UBS for traditional separate front and rear braking action. New for 2014 For 2014, the 1,199 cc features a new cylinder head design, new piston, and new exhaust for a modest increase in horsepower and torque that makes for an even more exciting engine character with more pulling power. The adjustments also result in stronger and smoother acceleration. Drive Mode has been recalibrated to provide more noticeable difference between the T setting and the S setting. The windscreen has been redesigned to provide superior wind protection with less wind noise, and the height can be adjusted quickly and easily without tools. Cruise control adjusts speed via a single push to the switch or, for larger adjustments, by continuously pushing the switch. Application of the brakes, clutch or throttle automatically releases the cruise control function. There is also a resume function that returns the cruise control to the most recent setting. Heated grips with 3 settings dramatically improve rider comfort in cold weather. The turn signals are now LED, adding to the overall visual appeal of the motorcycle. A new accessory / navigation mounting bar has been added above the meter for rider convenience. Engine The 1,199 cc parallel twin, liquid-cooled engine features a unique 270 degree crank for superior traction because both pistons fire so closely together. It’s almost like having a big-bore thumper without the uncomfortable vibration. Compact engine design uses a dry-sump oil supply inside the crankcase plus a side-mounted radiator for surprising narrowness. Downdraft twin bore fuel injection system with 12-hole injectors is tuned for off-road adventures, and is equally at home on long stretches of open highway. Proven YCC-T fly-by-wire technology allows for an advanced traction control system, which regulates ignition timing and fuel injection volume and throttle valve opening based on rear wheel spin. Three rider-selected modes are available to match conditions and the rider’s preference. Revised for 2014, Yamaha D-Mode has two settings: “T-mode” for Touring and general riding, giving a softer response; “S-mode” for Sport riding when the rider wants the most performance possible. Chassis / Suspension Electronically adjusted suspension offers four pre-lead settings, three damping adjustments and an additional seven damping fine-tuning adjustments. The machine can be set-up to match the riders requirements. The steel frame is designed to reduce rider fatigue during long rides. Using a steel main frame offers the best balance of strength and flexibility so it can help absorb jolts from uneven road surfaces.
