Offered for sale is an extremely rare, legendary 1972 GAZ 24 Volga. A status symbol in the Soviet Union/Russia/USSR, being large and luxurious. Those that were sold required a special permit to purchase them. Black with Brown interior. She is in a great cosmetic and mechanical shape. Incredible Survivor! It is only 67,000 kilometers/42,000 miles on the clock. 99.9% original. Even original "ribbon"speedometer works. Not original, only: seats, battery, tires, floor mats, carburetor and air filter case. Brand new, she was given to the Head of the Regional Communist Party Committee in Zhytomir, Ukraine for his personal use. Back in mid 80’s the car was privatized by him. After his death in early 90’s she was inherited by the grandson from whom I bought her back in February. I personally imported the vehicle back in April. She is completely street legal, has a Clear Florida title on hands and can be registered and insured anywhere in the US with no issues. Can be used as a daily driver. Also, I can ship her anywhere in the world. She runs and drives great, like she was designed for. No mechanical issues. Powered by aluminum-block, overhead valve, 2,445 cc (149.2 cu in) inline-four cylinder engine producing 95 hp (71 kW; 96 PS) with one twin-choke carburetor. Four-speed manual transmission with floor-mounted shifter. Rear wheel drive. No prior body damage. Brand new tires. Original spare tire. Original jack and hand air pump. Some history: Volga GAZ 24 was produced in Soviet Union by the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ, Gorky Automobile Plant) from 1970 to 1985. Development of GAZ 24 (then called M24) finished in 1966 when several prototypes were built. Volga GAZ24 was unveiled towards the end of 1967. However, only 32 units were built in 1968, primarily for road tests, with another 215 units built in 1969. 1968/69-built Volgas are often called "pre-serial" because full-scale manufacturing started only in 1970 (18,486 units built). Distinctive feature of the very first several prototypes were two outside rear view mirrors fixed on front fenders. Most of the pre-serial and all serial cars got one mirror placed on front left door The car was designed to last for years in severe road conditions, and its reinforced unibody construction gave Volga extra weight in comparing to foreign similar vehicles. Yet, power steering was not even an option. It gained the nickname "Barzha" (Barge). Standard equipment included self-adjusting power drum brakes with front/rear, split brake system, three-wave radio, interior safety padding, central armrests (both front and rear), two-speed windshield wiper, heater with defroster, electric clock, trunk and engine compartment lights. Early cars had "ribbon" speedometers, with gauge that filled up with red, in a thermometer fashion. The interior was available in three colors - red, brown or light gray. The dashboard was made of aluminum and painted in exterior color, the upper part covered with safety padding and black vinyl. Volga's styling was rather conventional and American inspired. One of the most recognizable features of GAZ 24 Volga sedan styling are chromed rhombic vents on the C-pillar. Among other distinctive features can be mentioned dashboard handles with "ivory" plastic inserts, two chromed "fangs" under front bumper, large two spoke steering wheel and large chromed parking brake handle placed under the dashboard on the right. Interior color selection was so haphazard, it was a standing joke the choice was made based on whatever was immediately at hand. Official cars were almost always black outside and red inside. GAZ 24 was displayed at the London Motor Show in 1970. Full-scale manufacturing started 15 July 1970. Export sales began in 1971. During 1970-74 Volga remained almost unchanged. Only minor modifications took place in 1972-73, when the car got new trunk lid lock, flat ashtrays in rear doors instead of early ashtrays that were built in rear doors armrests, new rear bumper and new modified radio with more pleasant appearance. In 1973 dashboard with simulated wood insert appeared (also there was a "silver" grained finish, used until 1974). After 1973, the ignition switch was moved from the dashboard to under the steering wheel to prevent knee injuries in road accidents, although that was inconvenient for drivers. The original strip speedometer was changed to dial in 1975, the same year when ignition switch was moved from the dash to the steering column. GAZ 24 Volga was exported to many countries, from Indonesia and Latin America to Western Europe. Right-hand-drive export versions also existed. Russian/Soviet biggest and most luxurious car sold to individual owners in the USSR in large quantities, though its price was very high and made it unavailable for most car buyers. Third generation. White/Grey with Green interior. She is in a great cosmetic and mechanical shape. Incredible Survivor! It is only 66,000 kilometers/41,000 miles on the clock. Two owners. Volgas were built with high ground clearance (which gives it a specific "high" look, contrary to "low-long-sleek" look of Western cars of similar design), rugged suspension, strong and forgiving engine, and rustproofing on a scale unheard of in the 1950s. The Volga was stylistically in line with the major United States manufacturers of the period, and incorporated such then-luxury features as the reclining front seat, cigarette lighter, heater, windshield washer and 3-wave radio. Three series (generations) GAZ-21 were released, most easily distinguished by the grille. The First Series (1956–58), known as the Star, featured a lattice of three large horizontal bars in the center of which was a medallion with a star. Vehicles of the Second Series (1958-1962), known as the Shark, featured a grille with 16 vertical slits. Finally, the Third Series (1962-1970), known as the Baleen, featured a grille with 34 thin vertical rods. The Third Series was produced from 1962 to 1970. Up for sale is my 55 metropolitan. The car is stock in appearance but made more drivable with a later model Nissan 4 cyl motor and automatic transmission.( I believe its from the mid 80s.) The paint is really nice but has a couple chips from normal use. The convertible top is in ok condition, it had a couple small rips repaired but it works good if your caught in the rain or for storing. I've owned the car for about 3 years and have had a lot of fun driving it to local car shows and just around the neighborhood .(first in Michigan and now in Florida) I am building a home here and its just been sitting a lot so I figure its time to let it go. Everything works on the car except the gas gauge. Every time I try to put gas in it after driving it a few times it only takes 1-2 gallons so it doesn't use very much! Even the original am tube radio still works (I unplugged the antenna to use on the cd am/fm) The brakes are manual and stiff. I don't have a problem driving it but you may want to look at them and have the drum brakes adjusted. A dealer friend of mine bought the car from a insurance auction and I was there when it was delivered to him, he literally jumped the car and it fired right up, in fact the car was so nice I bought it from him and have had it ever since. No parts were replaced. I am a classic car collector and have bought plenty of cars over the years, you can check my feedback as a seller. I want you to be happy with the car, that's why I'm always as honest about my cars as possible. I usually keep them a few years and then buy a new toy to "play" with. This car is one of my favorites, its a low dollar car that you will have a ton of fun with. If my house was done I would probably just keep it but I'm still a few months out. If you are unfamiliar with this vehicle, please visit www.qvaleauto.com. This is one of the most unique and facinating cars ever made. An American muscle platform wrapped in an Italian exotic body. Only @ 275 of these cars ever made. Drivetrain components are Ford, and easilly repaired if ever needed. Body and trim parts are still available as well. Car looks and drives great. All operations function properly. Most often, when a Qvale comes available, it is either a museum quality garage queen for big bucks(car sold for 80k when new), or a salvaged car being sold for parts. This is neither. This is the perfect car for weekend or daily driving. If you are a low profile person, this is not the car for you. Being inundated with questions and head turns is a day in the life of a Qvale owner. The Qvale is equipted with a patented Roto top convertible. It can be driven three ways, as a hardtop, targa top or full convertible. This is a great car, but not perfect. No dents or dings because it has a composite body, but there are some imperfections. Rock chips, etc. Some paintwork on back panel, but none noticible from 3 feet away. Interior in excellent condition. Looks, runs and sounds great. 4 valve Cobra motor runs awesome. 40k miles is barely broken in. Exotic supercar for the price of a Hyundai!
