1927 Marmon “Little 8” Sedan Up for sale is a rare 1927 MARMON “Little 8” 4 door sedan. This is a well executed armature restoration / assembly with professional subcontract sub assemblies. This car was redone to drive and show in parades….it is not a 100 point Pebble Beach restoration. The present owner, Sam, is believed to be the 3rd owner of this fine automobile. Sam with the help of his Brother in-law purchased the car about 1995 from the son of the original owner. The car was purchased new and resided in Bakersfield CA from 1927 through 1948. It was in a covered garage in Bakersfield from 1949-1995 which explains its solid condition when found by Sam. Sam took the car to his home in Springville, California where he started his 3-year frame off restoration. The car was quite complete when found ……the previous owner had taken the head off the motor and realized he was in over his head. Sam completely disassembled the car and sandblasted and painted all of the parts needed. The wood was in good condition and did not need replacement. You can see in a last several historical photos when acquired that this was a solid car. The car was originally Green with Ivory trim. Sam elected to repaint it Dupont Centari #43938A Yellow with Dupont Centari #7444A Brown fenders and trim. The car was painted in 1998 and shows well from 10 feet. The paint finish does have some “orange peel” which I think could be color sanded and buffed to a better finish if desired. This car was made to be a driver and a parade car so it does have some chips from being driven. Sam replaced all of the glass in the car with new safety glass at the time of the restoration. The interior was completely redone and was done tastefully. Originally this car came with Laidlaw Broadcloth but Sam elected to use a velour in Malibu Walnut brown for the seats from Visalia Upholstery co. Many of the component parts were purchased from LeBaron Bonney Co / Hampton Coach. A new wiring harness was made from components from “Rhode Island Wiring company” and Sam added an aftermarket turn signal switch and a matching rear right side tail light assembly. It has an electrical battery disconnect switch and an Optima 6 volt gel battery. I viewed and road in the car twice in the last two weeks and it started right up with ease. The radiator was boiled out and is the original “Honey Comb” type…..this car runs cool in the 140 to 160 degree area. It has a mixture of water and some antifreeze in the radiator. For the top, Restoration Specialties in Windber PA supplied the Sedan Top and the floor mat material……both areas look very nice and professionally done. The body, doors and all metal parts were sandblasted and then primed with a quality automotive primer. Visalia Custom Chrome did all of the plating on the car and most has held up well. There is some very fine pitting which could be improved with some OOOO steel wool and or Semi-Chrome paste. The chrome looks good but with some detail work could look great! The headlights were made by the CM Hall company in Detroit MI……one of them has some chrome pealing on the rim only as shown in the photos. The interior wood graining is exceptional and was done by Cornell’s Auto Restoration in Clarksville GA. The chassis was in fine shape and after blasting was painted black with Por-15. I found no rust on this car. Where is resided most of its life in Bakersfield CA is a very arid semi desert city. The tires are Sears Allstate brand and are believed to be about 20 years old. They have very slight weather checking in the side wall and if you plan to drive this at its top speed of 70 miles per hour …I would suggest replacing them. The tire size is 475/500/525/550-19. The tread shows little wear. The engine is the Marmon straight eight and a finely engineered overhead valve motor. The engine is 190 cubic inches in displacement and has a piston size of 2 ¾” and a stroke of 4”. It has 64 horse power and tests showed these Marmon 8’s got 18-22 miles per gallon. This engine block was bored out .030 and Jahn’s pistons replaced the originals. Globe Bearing in Los Angeles re-babbited the rods and Egge Machine provided the new valves and timing chain. The head has hardened seats so you can use the unleaded gasoline……this was made to be a driver…and with a top speed of Indy Track tested 70MPH can be taken on the freeways. Sam also added inline a solenoid actuated Studebaker overdrive. Currently Sam believes that the solenoid is stuck as the overdrive is not shifting. Sam has all of the original Marmon driveshaft parts to take it back to original if desired. The wooden wheels were serviced by an old time wheel smith in Central California. Sam had the original SHEBLER carb rebuilt by Mark Buber in Phoenix Arizona at the time of the restoration in 1998. This originally came with a Stewart-Warner fuel pump but that was not re-buildable so Sam installed a low pressure 6 volt electric fuel pump on the firewall. There is a repair that has been done to the intake manifold as shown in the photos. The Baby Marmon has some accessories which include a cigar lighter, electric clock, dual interior rear view mirrors, window shades (one installed, others restored and ready for installation), bud vase, lowering rear window, interior decorative medallions and lights. The car has a clear California title in Sam’s name and the VIN number is, the motor stamped number and there is no original Marmon ID plate. Its license is current until March 2015 and it is insured. The YOM California plate is owned by Sam and is available at an extra cost of $100.00 to a California buyer if desired. Here is some history of the Little 8 Marmon cars. Marmon was known for its quality engineering and competed with Cadillac LaSalle in it class. This car sold new for $1895.00 in 1927 compared to a model T or Chevrolet which sold for around $400.00 or about 4+ times more! Marmon little 8 models for 1927 include the 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe and 2-door collapsible coupe. Murray Body made the bodies on the 4th floor of the Marmon manufacturing building. The car had a low slung appearance and a 116” wheelbase with extremely long semi-elliptical springs. It sported Lovejoy shock absorbers and 5 main bearing overhead valve straight eight engine. This car is capable of 70 MPH in top gear and 50MPH is 2nd gear as tested by Motor News in 1927. It came with Bendix mechanical energized 4-wheel brakes. It has a modern Hypoid rear axle. An ad in 1927 states “The car’s engine is approached by no other passenger car motor built today in horsepower per cubic inch displacement and range of performance”. Sam has been a good steward of this fine automobile and has changed the oil and kept it greased the 19 years he has owned it. Unfortunately Sam is getting older and is ready to pass along this car to a new owner. It drives nice, brakes well and is Smooth Running. I am marketing this car for Sam and my name is Brian Mueller and I am the owner of Classy Chev USA. If you are the lucky winner of this auction a $250.00 deposit will be made to me by Pay Pal within 24 hours of auction end. The balance will need to be paid directly to Sam in a certified cashier’s check in advance of pickup or cash on pickup. You are buying the car from Sam. This 87 year old car is sold as-is where-is with no warranties expressed or implied. We suggest you view and drive the car which is located in Carlsbad, CA……serious buyers only…no tire kickers please. Please ask questions BEFORE bidding and have your money available to be able to consummate this transaction. WE take this sale very seriously and expect you to also. Sorry no trades.Special notes: One of the exterior locking handles is not correct and does not have a key, The interior window cranks are not correct for a Marmon and the interior door handles are not known to be original.
