I bought this vehicle in 2007 from a gentleman in North Carolina. It had rust in the usual places but I sanded out rust and repainted everything except the top. Cleaned up the engine and had the alternater rebuilt. Passenger floor was see through so I cut it out and formed sheet metal to fit and riveted it down, took out the front seat and carpeted from front to back.Chromed the steel bumpers, grill and all light bevels. runs and drives good but smokes a little at start up. Previous owner told me it was ordered from the factory by a bank president, but can't verify that fact. inside and out is all original and in good shape for being 47 years old. it has been garaged since I'ved owned it. I only drive it occasionally to town (12 miles away) and to local car shows within 100 miles. no dent or scratches. I even came in 2nd in a local car show.

1979 Checker Marathon Taxi (Clone) This 1979 Checker (brown) started out life as a (Winkoff limo) in Florida. It spent time in Chicago were it was painted Yellow and the Door emblems were added to the wrong doors. I was going to correct that mistake during the restoration but did not have the heart to ruin the wonderful Crackle and Patina. Somethings are best left alone. The NYC Medallion (4Y44) was added during my restoration. Under the hood is the best part. A Chevy 400 cid (365 HP) Holly 4 Barrel.(strong motor no smoke or noises) The Transmission GM TH600 , This is the transmission used in the HUMVEE.(shifts SMOOTH) The last time this transmission was used in a passenger car it was put in Ronald Regan's Caddy Limo. It has been serviced by my transmission guy who runs a TH600 in his wheel standing 1992 Camaro Drag Racer. The drag racers love this unit because it has over-driving CLUTCHs , that made shifts smooth and seamless. The following has been done to the Taxi since February. Wipers replaced All Hoses & Belts Valve Covers & Gaskets Oil&Filters Brake rotors turned & new ceramic pads/ Wheel bearings repacked. Rear Shocks / U bolts replaced- Gas Tank Replaced with Safer 20 gallon unit - New Tires LT rated LT 215 / 75/ R15 Yokohama- New Battery - Vinyl Roof - Interior Head Liner ( Acoustic Foam)- Dash Board (carbon fiber look Vinyl)- Taxi Meter & RED FLAG (Reproduction non - working)- Interior rear seat panels recovered.- New Door & Trunk Locks- Trunk Gasket replaced- All Door gaskets replaced- A/C is being serviced this week and upgraded to R134. I bought this 1981 Checker Marathon in Grand Rapids, Michigan 2 years ago, and my husband and I had a blast driving it back to Virginia. It was like going back in time. I had driven a 1964 Checker when I was in high school, so it was definitely a drive down memory lane. Along the way, we heard lots and lots of stories about a Checker in people's lives. Like the guy whose Dad ripped the door off one in front of the Waldorf in NYC after the taxi driver had insulted his mother. And since we drove through Kalamazoo on the way home, we got a lot of attention in the town that built the car. I believe we are the third owners of the car, as it has been relayed to me. The original owner lived in Michigan, then Florida, and sold the car to the owner I bought it from. 1981 was the last year the Checker Motor Company made this iconic automobile. Designed to run 500,000 miles, this car only has 133,500 original miles on it. We had it looked over by a Classic Auto Restore Shop, who did a thorough going over. Some highlights from his report: The engine and transmission appear to be in good working order, as is the exhaust system. Structurally, the body shows no significant signs of corrosion. The paint is thick and is doing an adequate job of protecting the metal. The interior is in good condition, with the exception of the headliner, which needs to be replaced. The door jambs, door panels, trunk lid, hood and LS/RS front fenders, which are fiberglass, appear in good condition. They performed a check of body filler thickness across the body, and found little evidence of any filler material which is a positive sign of the condition of the body metal beneath the paint. Upholstery is in great shape....no tears. The downside: Like many Checkers, the frame is considered to be in poor condition, and has significant corrosion. The main frame channel beams have been repaired in the past, but the overall integrity of the frame is in question. Specifically, the left side front shock/spring tower is damaged and near failure. The car looks beautiful, though, and is a head turner! I'm selling this vehicle as is, where is. Payment by Cash or PayPal. If you are the lucky winner, you are responsible for picking it up in Charlottesville, VA, or arranging pickup and shipping.

Normal 0 0 1 437 2493 20 4 3061 11.1539 0 0 0 PLEASE NOTE: IN ADDITION TO THE 24 PHOTOS ABOVE, THERE ARE MORE PHOTOS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS LISTING!Up for bids is my 1980 Checker Marathon. I’ve owned it for just over three years (clear Maryland title in my name), and have had extensive mechanical and cosmetic work done to it during this time. I’ve personally driven it just over 20,000 miles, and have not hesitated to do whatever work is needed to make it a safe and reliable car. It will cruise all day at 65-70mph. It is also quite eye-catching, and the car never fails to get a compliment or a thumbs-up from onlookers whenever I drive it. I have driven it to Canada twice (a 1200-mile roundtrip each time), and recently participated in the Checker Car Club of America’s national convention in New York City (I have been a club member in good standing since I purchased the car, and the car is well-known within the club). This is a car that is meant to be driven. Mechanically, it is religiously serviced every 3,000 miles by my local mechanics. Major work on the car includes a new radiator (Oct. 2014 - locally-made custom tanks, custom-made high-efficiency core by Detroit Radiator Corp -- not cheap! ), new Jeg’s starter this year, new idler arm (2011), new water pump (Oct. 2014), newly-rebuilt heater core (2014), new (NOS) gas tank (2013), new hoses and too many other things to mention. I recently had the engine power-washed, degreased, and had a few items painted. It just had an oil and filter change, as well as a lube, and it just had the thermostat, thermostat housing gasket, cap, rotor, coil and plugs replaced. Did I mention that this car was religiously serviced??? There are a few minor things that do not work – the front defrost vent is not hooked up, and the fiber optic ribbon that illuminates the heat/defrost etc words on the dash is not present, but these items do not affect in any way your ability to enjoy this vehicle. Cosmetically, it has had much work done. New upholstery, headliner, bodywork, paint, rubber trim/gaskets, and a few tasteful custom touches have been done over the last three years (hand-painted pinstripes, custom lettering on the 1950's-1960's Chevy steering wheel, glove box and air cleaner cover, custom jump seat covers, custom floor mats, custom bumper valances are but a few). It also has a great Alpine stereo unit with an iPod connection and three Pioneer rear speakers (plus two box speakers under the front seat), and a recently installed Kicker Hideaway powered subwoofer. It sounds great. The interior door panels are in decent original shape, but they are among the few interior features that I chose not to replace at the time I had the interior work done (I have included a photo of one of the door panels to give you an idea of their present overall condition). You may want to consider refurbishing them at some point. The body and metal trim is not perfect – it does have some issues here and there, and I’ve shown a few of them in the photos. If you know anything about Checkers, then you’ll know that they are susceptible to rust along the top of the fenders. Both rear fenders have rust bubbles there, but I do have an NOS left rear fender that you can have painted and replace the one that’s on there now (if you paint both sides of the fender, it should eliminate the likelihood of it happening again). However, this is still a great-looking car, and it can definitely be enjoyed as it is. The underside of the car is solid.I also have some additional parts and literature that go with the car -- another grille, two more sets of hubcaps, a new master cylinder, the original 1980 GM steering wheel, a shop manual, receipts for much of the work, and a few other bits. Overall, this is a solid, good-running and good-looking car that’s ready to enjoy now. The asking price is a mere fraction of what I've invested in and devoted to this vehicle over the last three years, and I believe it's a very fair asking price. I encourage you to contact me with any questions or requests for additional photos, and you’re also welcome to come see the car in person (I am located just south of Baltimore, Maryland). I will entertain reasonable offers, but those seeking 'bargain basement' deals will be politely ignored. A non-refundable $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the sale, and payment in full within 7 days. Payment can be made in person with cash, or you may FedEx me a check. If you pay by check, please be aware that I will need to wait for the funds to clear before I release the car or send you the title. I will also accept a bank transfer as payment for the entire amount (must clear by my bank before I release the car or send you the title, plus there is a $16 bank transfer fee that you will need to add to the final sale price). Pickup/shipping is your responsibility. I can help out at this end to make life easier for you, but you need to take care of all the arrangements and cost. Please note that the car is sold as-is, where is, and there are no expressed nor implied warranties. You should ask all questions prior to bidding, and if you’re able to come see the car in person, I encourage you (or your agent) to do so. I recently participated in the huge annual Rockville (Maryland) car show, and my Checker was a featured vehicle in the show's 'orphan' car display: When you own and drive this car, these are the kinds of things that are left on your windshield....
