1955 Porsche 550 Spyder Replica for sale. Titled as 1955 Porsche 550, Appraised at $39,500 way back in 2007. -Beck Spyder build by Chuck Beck himself-BRAND NEW $10,000 2165cc engine dyno'd at 160+ hp (only 500mi on engine)-5 lug wheels (I have the chrome moon hub caps but I like the look without them)-special adjustable chrome coil over rear shocks for a much more comfortable ride (most cars are VERY bumpy)-Functioning front brake ducts (most are just impressions or stickers, this car is just like the original)-Actual grill in front for oil cooler like the original (most others are just bump impressions)-Full size spare tire in correct location (see pictures, It fits in its spot under the clamshell in the correct position but I do not have the mounting hardware installed because I like it without the tire)-Original style guages with speedo in kilometers-Helmet fairing, correct side mirror, roll bar, correct badges and Porsche lettering, tonneau cover and much much more! This car is WAY faster than the typical 1.9L engine. HISTORY OF THIS PARTICULAR CARIt was purchased as a manufactured car and NOT A KIT constructed by the owner. For those who are familiar with Beck Spyders, you know they set the standard in the 550 Replica market. If you are not familiar with Beck, search around so you can be comfortable with the fit and finish of Beck Spyders. The car was assembled by Chuck Beck himself in 1992 and the original engine was built by CB Performance. I have the original paperwork signed by Chuck Beck and the paperwork from CB Performance. The original owner barely drove the car and died shortly afterward, his widow eventually encouraged her brother-in-law to purchase the car from her storage in 2005. He had the car repainted in 2007 and professionally restored to its original luster from all the years in storage. He himself was elderly and rarely drove it. As of May of 2015 the car only had 1300km (800mi) on it which is when I purchased the car. I had always wanted a 550 Spyder but I am moving out of the country in February 2016 so I decided to purchase this car to have for such a short time but enjoy it for Hot August Nights here in Reno. Unfortunately, the engine had a crack in the lifter bushing in the case when I bought it (unknown to me) and it broke out during Hot August Nights and the engine was unrepairable. I had a brand new engine (new block and all) built by Herbert Performance with reliability in mind. Eric Herbert built me a new long-block and it dyno'd at 160hp without pushing it to the redline (it was a brand new engine and I didn't want it pushed too hard). He said the engine would make near 180hp if the exhaust were bigger and the engine tuned for performance. I preferred it to run more reliably :) He was really impressed with how it turned out and said he would charge $10,000 to build this motor (I helped out in many ways and re-used the tin and carburetors and other non affected items from the original engine so the cost was only $5,000 to me. See the receipt in the pictures). The new engine only has 500 miles on it and the car is ready to go! I have really enjoyed the car but the summer is over and I and my family are getting things ready for our move. I have nearly 100 pictures and videos to see. The tires are wider than they should be in the front and rub on some turns. I have left it because it is not a big deal to me but thinner tires on the front would be a good idea. THE PORSCHE 550 SPYDER, A VERY BRIEF HISTORY:- The Porsche 550 Spyder was inspired by the original Porsche 356. From 1951, Porsche 356 prototypes were built and raced by Walter Glockler. His successes led to Porsche’s decision to build the first Porsche specifically developed for racing, the 550. The engine was based on the VW Beetle flat-4. It had shaft-driven, twin overhead camshafts, a roller-bearing crankshaft and dual ignition. Displacement was 1498 cc for the 1.5-liter class. Fed by a pair of Solex carbs, it produced 110 bhp at 6200 rpm. With an aluminum, monocoque body maximized for compactness, aerodynamics and lightness, the car weighed around 1300 lb. All the factory 550 Spyders were silver in color. The first three were hand-built prototypes. 550-03 raced as a roadster at the Nurburgring Eifel Race in May 1953, winning its first race. 550-05 was introduced to the general public at the 1953 Paris Motor Show. Over the following years, The Werks Porsche team evolved and raced the 550 with outstanding success and it was recognized wherever it appeared. With the 550, Porsche was the first manufacturer to organize, external, racing sponsorship. The Porsche 550 Spyder became an active participant on European and US championship circuits between 1953 and as late as 1965. Starting in over 370 races, with approximately 95 overall wins and an additional 75 class wins, the Spyder dominated and/or embarrassed more powerful cars from the prestigious racing stables. The cars were well represented at famous circuits around the world and soon became the racing car of choice for privateers, earning the reputation of ‘Giant Killer’. Only 90 cars were built with 78 being sold to the public for motor sport purposes. For such a limited number of builds, the 550 Spyder was always in a winning position, usually finishing in the top three in its class. The beauty of the 550 was that it could be driven to the track, raced and then driven home which showed its incredible flexibility. THE JAMES DEAN SAGA:- For the younger among us, James Dean was a movie idol of the fifties. He starred in the major, movie successes East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause and Giant with the film stars of the day including Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Sal Mineo, Natalie Wood, Julie Harris, Raymond Massey, Dennis Hopper and others. However, his passion was racing. After a succession of fast cars, motorbikes, street and track races, in 1955, he traded his Porsche Super Speedster for a brand new Porsche Spyder 550. While his racing activities were contrary to the wishes of and his contract with Warner Bros, this did nothing to deter him. After breaking up with girlfriend and film star Ursula Andress he was returning home when, shortly after being cited for speeding, he collided almost head-on with a Ford Custom Wagon. The Porsche was demolished and James Dean died at the scene. At the age of 25 and the height of a movie career, this was, of course, major international news, the side effect of which was the increased, enduring fame of the Porsche 550 Spyder. MY 1955 PORSCHE 550 SPYDER:- My car is actually a 1991 reconstruction by the famous Chuck Beck. Chuck started making them in 1982 and his 550’s are widely acknowledged as being the most accurate and solidly constructed while capturing the very essence of the original 550’s with incredible handling and typical Porsche/VW reliability. Why replicas? They are what us lesser mortals have to aspire to now. Of the original 550’s that still exist, one is in Ralph Lauren’s famed collection of classic cars and another belongs to major Porsche fan, Jerry Seinfeld. The last known, original sale was at a Goodings auction at Amelia Island in March, 2012 for $3.685m – as featured in Keith Martin’s “What’s My Car Worth” on the Velocity channel. Some of the replicas on the roads today have been made to look like James Dean’s “Little Bastard”, as he christened his car. Mine has stayed faithful to the original, Porsche look. The paintwork is almost immaculate with no rust (fiber glass) and no stress cracks but it does have some minor stone chips (I think there are 4!). As you can see from the photos, even the underside is noteworthy. The milometer reflects a tad over 10,000 miles. While I can’t substantiate this, I have absolutely no reason to disbelieve it. 10,000 miles in 24 year equals an average of around 35 miles a month. Just enough to keep everything as it ought to be. The engine is a horizontally-opposed, 4-cylinder of 1,951 ccs, putting out approx. 125 bhp, it’s in excellent condition. It's fed by 2 twin-choke, down-draught Dellorto carburetors with chrome air filters, is fitted with an oil cooler and oil temperature gauge and drives through a trouble-free, 4-speed, manual, gearbox. At 10,000 miles I figured a special servicing was desirable and I have recent, maintenance bills for just about everything to which one needs to pay attention even having the carbureters sent out to be rebuilt. In total, I have spent nearly $6,000 since my purchase. Brakes are the traditional mix of discs in the front and drums at the rear. The front tires are recent Michelin XZX 165SR15 Radials while the rears are Michelin XH4 205/70/R15 95S Radials. The rear wheels have been typically set up with slight positive camber to minimize wear to the inners of the tires under acceleration. With an incredible power-to-weight ratio, both the acceleration and handling are legendary and, with the low height, seating and windshield, the whole experience is “go-kart” -like not to mention the incredible sounds from the exhaust. The engine compartment is beautifully detailed with chrome fittings and is exceptionally clean and well maintained. Paintwork is Porsche silver throughout with a black interior. It has the correct detailing and vintage authenticity. The period gauges and supplementary oil pressure and temperature gauges are operative. There is a copy Nardi, wood-rimmed steering wheel. All knobs are from billet aluminum. The wheels are chromed as are the lug nut covers. There is a center-hood, quick-release, chromed fuel filler. All the lights and their gaskets are in great condition. Security and rain protection are provided by a brand new, black, canvas, tonneau cover. Crow, vintage and little used, racing seatbelts are fitted, five-point to the driver’s side and lap to the passenger’s. Under the hood there is an un-used EMPI tool kit, jack, etc., and tire inflator kit. There are twin, leather safety straps to the rear, clam shell. Traditional rear view is complemented by a matching-color, vintage, Spyder Mach 1 fender mirror, just as the original cars. Our Type 1 engines are built by FAT Performance. Other builders such as Emory Motorsports uses Greg Anderson at FAT Performance for their Type 4 race Outlaw built engines. Greg Anderson has over 30 years of experience building Type 4 engines. Best in the industry. Our watercooled engine packages produce more power without a turbo than ones with them. Everything is new and assembled by technicians with over 25 years of experience, only the best. Transaxle: We include dual CNC’d aluminum heavy duty side covers. All our cases are hand selected and powder coated. We use one piece rubber axle boots. The attention to detail is amazing. All new stainless steel hardware. All new internals. Transaxle cases are constructed of magnesium which can be tough to powder coat and clean up without making massive pit-marks or cracks… our powder coater has over 15 years of experience in powder coating. We simply do not spray paint the trans case like other builders in the industry. Chassis: DOM steel, MIG welded by our experienced welder who has over 20 years of welding chassis under his belt. Each chassis is then powder coated, not painted. Powder coating is far more durable which prevents scratching and easy rock chips later down the road. All chassis are constructed in our jigs to ensure perfect fitment, true and straight driving/suspension mounts. We do not cut any corners whatsoever. Our floors are solid aluminum unlike our other competition who uses fiberglass floors which are unsafe. THE ABSOLUTE ALL ALUMINUM 550 SPYDER: History:Constructed with a curvaceous aluminum body wrapped around a tubular steel ladder chassis that has a 1.5-liter air-cooled mid-engine, the 550 weighed 550 kilograms (1,213 pounds). With its 135hp engine in such a lightweight, superb handling machine, the 550 beat every other vehicle within its own class and could run with much higher-powered (but heavier) machines. Only a limited quantity of 4-5 units/year will be available for those customers who understand exclusivity and timing. Our cars are built to exact specifications as in 1955. The 550 Spyder is considered one of the most desirable and legendary sport cars of all time. Four years of development: In 2008 Alloycars has taken the initiative to handcraft the aluminum 550 Spyder using exact 3-D scan data of an original car as well as over 800 blueprints/sketches, drawings and hundreds of photos taken from each component of the original dismantled car. Each of those components was re-cast and re-created as a mirror image of the original. These intricate components (most hidden under the body) make it impossible for even a seasoned expert to tell it apart from an original 550. This stunning Beck Porsche 550 Spyder was assembled by Special Edition Inc. of Indiana July 2013 and only driven 210 miles since. Professionally constructed and built with authenticity in mind. It includes a banjo steering wheel like the original, an ivory knob set, dash grab handle, and chrome starter button. The car also has the vintage 2 point racing belts, Carrera rear view mirror and leather hood hold down straps. It has the classic racing helmet fairing trimmed in red leather. The car has the oil cooler front end grill, Wendler body tags and complete Porsche Spyder emblems. It also has an original Spyder E-brake and the correct offset gear shifter. The interior is red leather with the correct Spyder door handles. The car has the upgraded Pro-Street option package, as well as correct wheel rims and full size spare. The engine was built by Patrick Downs of CB motors and is new except for correct break-in and dyno testing. The engine is 1915cc delivering 125hp. It is equipped with dual carbs and a 4 to 1 exhaust system as on the original Spyder, and disc brakes. The car color is silver grey and comes complete with convertible top, frame and side curtains. The car has the correct working RS doors for carb access. It has original spyder tail and marker lights, and period correct racing roundel side lights. Correct racing decals round out this beautiful package. The car runs and drives beautifully and gives the sensation of speed from the very start. There are no known mechanical issues since it is nearly brand new delivered to the first owner in late summer of 2013.
