Originally purchased in the City by the Bay, San Francisco, California, this blue oval product spent most of its life with one family. It is handsomely presented in Cordoba Tan with a matching convertible top, red pinstripes and red painted wire wheels with chrome trim rings and center caps nestled within Universal 6.00-16 whitewall tires. The Model 48 debuted in 1935, an update to the previous V-8-powered Model 40A. Nineteen thirty-five also marked the debut of Ford’s “convertible sedan,” which combined the best features of a closed body, a cabriolet and a four-door sedan into a single design. Under the hood is the period correct Ford 221 CID Flathead V-8, the only engine offered on 1935 Fords, with a two-barrel carburetor and coupled to a three-speed sliding gear manual transmission. Suspension consisted of a solid front axle with single transverse leaf spring, 3/4-floating rear axle with single transverse leaf spring and there’re four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Vehicle recently received a new Walker radiator. Outside, the car’s brightwork is a mix of new and old. The grille shows some patina while the front and rear bumpers have been re-plated relatively recently. The car’s paint looks fantastic overall but shows some minor blemishes. Other exterior features are dual-mounted horns and fog lights, a rear-mounted spare tire within a hard case and a trunk rack with a new trunk featuring a blue interior. Car comes with vintage California black plates. Inside, there is high-quality leather upholstery, wood accents, a factory AM radio, which replaced the standard ashtray, driver’s only vacuum-actuated windshield wiper, an optional oil gauge and the original “banjo” steering wheel. However, the fuel and engine temperature gauges are inoperable. The interior is so comfortable, you will feel like you’re in your living room! In 1935, as Ford weathered the deepening economic depression, it tempted and encouraged those few families in America who could afford to buy a new car with the slogan, “Greater Beauty, Greater Comfort, and Greater Safety.” Phil Wright, a Briggs designer whose resume included work with the Pierce Silver Arrow, aided in providing some of the attractive new styling for the 1935 Fords. On the outside, contemporary styling touches such a more sharply raked windshield, a narrower grille pushed forward and made more prominent by beginning front fender integration, which de-emphasized the fenders in relation to the grille. In back, there were new, twin taillights. Ford offered 10 body styles in Deluxe trim, including this convertible sedan (Code 740) and ‘Tudor’ and ‘Fordor’ models with a new built-in touring trunk. The transverse leaf spring suspension remained but up front but the front spring moved ahead of the axle to provide more cabin room on its 112-inch wheelbase. In addition, ’35 Fords featured lower bodies and new passenger comfort was enhanced by “Centerpoise Ride”, which placed the rear seat just forward of the rear axle, reducing the effects of bouncing on rough roads. Meanwhile, safety features included twin horns and taillights on DeLuxe models and both Standard and DeLuxe cars incorporated parking lamps placed within the painted headlights, eliminating the need for cowl lamps. Ford’s combination of price, practicality and looks combined to help it sell 820,000 units, taking the sales lead from Chevrolet for the first time since 1930. Additional options on all ’35 Fords included – radio, heater, clock, cigar lighter, whitewall tires and a Greyhound radiator ornament. A fine representative of a rare and attractive body style, this vehicle will make a unique addition to any vintage car collection. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!! 1951 ALLARD J2 Chassis no. 99J2121 289ci OHV Hi-Po V-8 Engine 4-Barrel Carburetor 306bhp at 6,000rpm 4-Speed Manual Transmission Semi-Independent Front Suspension - De Dion Rear Axle 4-Wheel Hydraulic Drum Brakes *Named the "Ultimate Allard" by Simon Taylor *Shelby Cobra 289 Hi-Po engine *Beautifully restored and well-documented example *The feature of numerous publications *1 of only 43 surviving J2s out of a total of 90 produced THE ALLARD MOTOR COMPANY Using a crashed Ford V8 coupe onto which he had grafted the body of a Grand Prix Bugatti, Sydney Allard constructed one of the most unlikely of all pre-war trials specials. However, the Allard Special's lightweight construction and relatively powerful American V8 engine, although not the first such combination, demonstrated the formula's potential, providing the inspiration for future imitators including Carroll Shelby, who acknowledged Allard's influence on the Cobra. This particular Allard is acclaimed by many to be the finest J2 in existence. In accordance with its original build sheet, J2121 was assembled on August 24th, 1951. From new, the chassis was fitted with an Ardun-modified Mercury flathead V8. On March 28th, 1952, J2121 was purchased by its first owner, B.S. Wade of Cheadle, England and was registered under FBA 685. After a series of brief ownerships, in 1963 the car wound up in the hands of Allard's former promotions manager, Gerry Belton. Early on in Mr. Belton's stewardship, he commissioned to have the body repainted in classic British Racing Green and to have the interior re-trimmed. Being a former Allard employee, Mr. Belton possessed the connections to have the upholstery work performed by the original upholsterer who fitted the car's interior form new. Period photographs show the cosmetically refreshed J2 participating in both the Brighton Speed Trials in Brighton, England during 1964 and in an Allard Concours, which occurred in 1966. After numerous years of enjoyment, Mr. Belton sold J2121 in 1968 to fellow Allard enthusiast, Bob Judd, an American businessman who at the time was living in London. As noted in Simon Taylor's 1969 article featured in the August issue ofAutosport magazine, at the time Mr. Judd acquired J2121 the car was in need a full engine rebuild. Upon digestion of this news, Mr. Judd contemplated upgrading the J2 with the famed and hallowed Shelby Cobra 289 Hi-Po V-8. As a true Allard enthusiast he was hesitant, wanting to insure that he was doing right by the car. Mr. Judd took his J2 to the Allard works in Capham, London, and spoke with the very same craftsmen who built J2121 eighteen years prior. Mr. Judd presented his question to the craftsmen – would it be sacrilege, instead of rebuilding the old engine, to fit a brand-new Cobra unit? The craftsmen responded by asking if it would make the car faster; Mr. Judd confirmed that it would indeed. The craftsmen replied: "Put it in then. That's what Sydney (Allard) would have done!" After hearing this from the car's original builder and receiving his blessing, Mr. Judd took J2121 to Bob Rayner of Acre Road Garage, where he had the car fitted with a 289 powerplant and a close-ratio Ford transmission. After driving the freshly powered J2, Simon Taylor went on to explain the experience stating: "With identical power and torque and similar weight to the AC Cobra, the (J2) is certain to be as quick as it felt. Once underway it just thunders forward, its snub green nose swallowing up the road and its Wagnerian exhausts seeming to blow everything else off the road." It was this experience that inspired Simon Taylor to name J2121 the "Ultimate Allard". Shortly after the release of the Taylor article in 1969, Mr. Judd sold J2121 to Otto Bowden, a well-known collector based in Jacksonville, Florida with an impressive collection of other prestigious automobiles, including the likes of Ferrari and Bugatti. In the early 1970s J2121 was yet again featured in a magazine, this time in an advertisement for Champion spark plugs. In 2008, after owning J2121 for nearly 40 years, Mr. Bowden sold the car to Dr. Martin Stickley of Winter Park, Florida. Wanting to be able to show the J2 at the nation's finest concours events, Dr. Stickley sent J2121 to Gassman Automotive Products of Waynesboro, Virginia, to receive a comprehensive, show quality restoration. It was discovered that the engine in the car at that time was that of a 225hp Ford V8, so one of the first orders of business became sourcing a correct, 1965 Cobra 289 Hi-Po engine. Dr. Stickley delivered and, after finding the correct type engine, had it balanced, blueprinted and fitted with an all-roller valve train, oversized Manley valves, and custom tubular headers. Some of the other work performed during the 80-hour-per-week, six-month restoration included stripping, straightening, and powder coating the chassis, rebuilding the suspension, replacing the interior with cork Connolly leather, refurbishing the gauges, and bringing the body down to bare metal before dressing it in beautiful Allard British Racing Green. Photos of the restoration process are available, which showcase the level of craftsmanship and care that was put into each aspect of the project. The extensive restoration was completed in 2011 and, soon after, the beautifully restored Allard was featured in a number of prestigious events and took home a number of acclaimed awards. The impressive list includes being shown at the 2011 Amelia Concours, winning Best in Show at the 2011 Winter Park, Florida All British Car Concours, winning the Spirit of the Road Award at the 2012 Boca Raton Concours, and an award at the 2012 Amelia Island Concours. In 2012, J2121 was also yet again the feature of a magazine article, this time in the July issue of Classic Motorsports Magazine. In total only 90 Allard J2s were built. Of those 90 cars, it is believed that just 43 examples have survived. Of the 43 examples still with us, J2121 is sure to be one of the most well-known and extensively documented. Accompanying the sale of J2121 is its original build sheet, factory inspection certificate, the original British registration logs, and numerous pieces of original equipment such as the original, full windscreen with dual electric wipers, tools, Dunlop Racing Tires, and front fender mud flaps, amongst others. When considering that J2121 is believed to wear its original aluminum bodywork, has been featured in numerous publications, was the recipient of a no-expense-spared restoration, has won multiple awards, and is powered by a legendary powerplant, it is very easy to see why J2121 has become known as the "Ultimate Allard."WE EXPORT WORLDWIDEI will assist in shipping. If you are overseas, I will bring vehicle to freight forwarder in Miami - Florida who will put on a boat for you. If you are in the US, you can make arrangements with a shipper and should cost between $1200 - $1800 to anywhere in the US.I CAN ARRANGE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD! Feel free to ask questions. Warranty ALL SALES ARE FINAL WITH CAR BEING SOLD WHERE IS, AS IS! The vehicle is offered with a right to a personal inspection by any bidder or agent of any bidder. The vehicle is available for inspection prior to bidding. If you are the high bidder and unable to inspect said vehicle before auction close, you or an agent will have (7) days to inspect said vehicle after the close of auction. I encourage a physical inspection strongly to avoid any misunderstandings or representations. All used vehicles should be assumed to have some degree of wear. No vehicle is perfect to everyone. Each vehicle has its strengths, styles, tendencies and shortcomings. Therefore, despite our best efforts to verify a vehicle’s mechanical condition, we are not able to warranty a manufacturer’s workmanship or previous owner’s diligence in care. It is for this reason that all vehicles are sold ”WHERE/IS, AS/IS”. We have described the above mentioned vehicle to the best of our ability. However, with all classic and exotic vehicles, the condition is subjective. Please be advised that no oral or written statements concerning any vehicle constitutes a representation or warranty of the condition of the said vehicle. INDUSTRY UNIQUE RETURN POLICY: If for any reason you receive your vehicle and have buyer’s remorse, are not happy with the vehicle or just don’t want it for any reason we will purchase the car back from you. We must be notified in writing of your decision to return the vehicle within seven (7) days of your receipt of said vehicle. The vehicle may not have more than 75 additional miles on the odometer from the time it left our possession and be returned in the same condition that it left. You WILL be responsible for a restocking fee that will equal 20% of the purchase price of the vehicle, no exceptions. You will also be responsible for shipping the vehicle back to our shop at your expense. Copyright © 1999-2016 MotoeXotica. All Rights Reserved. Car is in very good condition. It was restored once maybe 30 years ago. 99% complete and runs and drives fine. Rare car with the factory supercharger still on and working perfectly!!!! It's been sitting for years and my customer wants to sell it now. I am handling the sale for him and have a clear title for it. Almost no rust anywhere and interior is in excellent condition. Most of these cars were "hot rodded" over the years and the engine pulled and replaced with a small block Chevy but not this one. It appears that 2 fenders might have been re-painted over the years as the yellow color is slightly off but the car is super solid. An excellent candidate to just get in and drive or as a restoration project. If you're looking for either you'd be happy with this car. I own a hot rod fabrication & restoration shop and can assist with any mechanical or restoration services. We are a Hagerty Insurance approved shop so nothing but the best work will be done!!!
