2017 KTM 250 XC-F, 2017 KTM 250 XC-F SMALL-BORE DOMINATION Already known for its strong performance, the new generation 250 XC-F presents itself with a newly developed, stronger engine built into an all-new chassis. The performance combination of a powerful and much torqueier engine in a lightweight and agile chassis is sure to make the 250 XC-F the star of the show for the future. Features may include: ENGINE The new 250 XC-F engine is based on the similar overall design of its predecessor, with some major refinements to make this power plant more compact and lighter, with the production of improved torque and power across the entire rpm range. Perhaps one of the most impressive benefits of the new design is a weight reduction of 2 lbs, while still including the incredibly beneficial electric starter. The reworked engine guarantees an improved power curve over the entire rev range up to 14,000 rpm, which makes the new 250 XC-F a winner for both amateur and professional riders. CYLINDER HEAD The centerpiece of the compact DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) engine is the new cutting-edge cylinder head. It features improved combustion chamber geometry, two 150 g lighter overhead camshafts with new timing, plus a friction-optimized super-fine surface, new finger followers with a 30 % harder DLC coating and a reworked timing drive (friction reduced and shorter DID timing chain, new sprockets and chain guides). New valve springs and retainers for the four lightweight titanium valves (intake 32.5 mm, exhaust 26.5 mm) and high-flow ports create a maximized flow rate for an optimal power band and maximum performance, all the way up to a redline of 14,000 rpm. CYLINDER & PISTON In the reworked and shorter cylinder that has a bore of 78 mm, is a weight-reduced, forged bridged box-type piston made by CP. It features a unique piston shape adapted to the new combustion chamber and stands out with its extra-rigid structure, combined with a low weight. The compression ratio is at 14.4:1. Thanks to the low oscillating masses, the engine offers extremely lively characteristics. COUNTER BALANCER SHAFT In order to balance the mass-forces, the new 250 XC-F engine uses a multifunctional counter balance shaft that also drives the water pump and timing chain. It features new sprockets fitted to the new timing chain. ELECTRIC STARTER The new 250 XC-F is fitted with an electric starter as standard, which a clear advantage in the heat of battle. A new starter motor made by Mitsuba (modified for easy disassembly) and a weight-reduced starter drive guarantees more efficient and reliable starting. ENGINE CASES AND COVER The completely new design of the die-cast engine cases allowed for a much more centralized shaft configuration. However, those who have already had this pleasure know: The power of such an engine develops completely differently, the expanding combustion gases effectively pressing down twice as often on the crankshaft as a four-stroke. Consequently, KTM two-stroke enduros, which are designed more for high peak power, still pull away forcefully from the very bottom up and that's a real pleasure. And since the engine on the FREERIDE 250 R is tuned completely in keeping with the Freeride notion - not for maximum power but for harmonious torque progression and optimum rideability - this motorcycle is an all-rounder that feels all the more at home, the tougher the terrain becomes. Features may include: FRAME During the course of developing the FREERIDE 250 R, KTM design engineers pulled out all the stops to exploit the full potential of the substantially more compact two-stroke engine. As with the FREERIDE 350, the frame is a composite construction comprising high-grade, chrome-molybdenum steel profiles bolted together with forged light-alloy components. However, compared with the FREERIDE 350 frame, the compact two-stroke engine with its laterally routed exhaust has allowed the lower frame tubes to be raised by a whole 60 millimetres. This results in significantly greater ground clearance in conjunction with the large steering lock, a benefit that becomes all the more apparent, the tougher the terrain: Particularly when negotiating trials sections, the FREERIDE 250 R bottoms out much later. SUBFRAME The bolted subframe made from high-strength plastic impresses with high inherent stability and makes a significant contribution to the lightweight-construction concept of the FREERIDE 250 R. The rider can get a firm hold at the integrated grip recesses well-protected from dirt should the rear wheel ever become stuck in the mud. BATTERY The Freeride 250 R is the first KTM motorcycle to be equipped as standard with a lithium-ion starter battery. This innovative technology not only saves one kilo of weight, it impresses above all with significantly greater efficiency, thereby ensuring higher efficiency of the electric starter system - in other words: the battery doesn't give up the ghost, even when started frequently. SWINGARM Weighing only 3.2 kg, the light-alloy cast swingarm has been designed by KTM chassis experts to support the suspension system comprising frame and suspension components with targeted flexibility in the direction of oscillation. The result: the current SX-F models are the slimmest, lightest bikes on the track. Rather than kicking to start - you can focus on kicking ***. AIRBOX The airbox design offers maximum protection of the air filter while ensuring maximum airflow. The large twin-air filter is mounted in a stiff cage, which at the same time holds the system in place. This design is so simple you could still pop a fresh one in with a face full of mud. Without tools. In seconds. FRAME The high-tech, lightweight chrome-moly steel frame is engineered for excellent handling, precise cornering and supreme stability. You can also count on high torsional rigidity and low longitudinal stiffness for better absorption of the energy created by the front and rear suspension sucking up jumps and bumps. In short: more comfort and less rider fatigue. Laterally attached, lightweight engine head stays contribute to a reduced vibration level. Two threaded inserts in the lower cradle tubes allow for an optional skid plate. The engineers were able to pull off all that, while making the frame two pounds lighter than that of the lightest competitor on the market. In addition, the frame is easier to maintain, easier to work on and supplies more space for the tank and other components. The bike also features an extra-light aluminum subframe, which weighs in at less than 2 pounds. FOOTPEGS Sophisticated ´No Dirt´ footpegs prevent clogging of the footpeg pivot, even when digging in deep ruts. Looking for a higher riding position?
