However, it is time to give a new push to the segment and set a clear statement that two-stroke technology is going to have a successful future due to its outstanding power-to-weight ratio, low cost and simplicity. The newly developed 150 cm³ engine for MY 2016 features a completely new architecture with the latest know-how and state-of-the-art technology. The result is that it produces better power all over the rev range, it s more than 2 kg lighter than the predecessor and it is much more compact. Features May Include: ENGINE The engine of the 150 SX has been known to be the most powerful and most competitive engine of the class. CYLINDER The heart of the new engine is the newly designed cylinder with a bore of 58 mm. Apart from reworked ports it features a newly developed power valve unit with a sophisticated mechanism for the lateral support exhaust ports. Together with a new two-component cylinder head it is the key for a massive performance increase over the entire range. Even though it is 360 g lighter and more compact than the predecessor the new layout of the water jackets in the cylinder and head guarantee a better heat dissipation, which is important when the going gets tough. The cylinder, head and piston unit can now also be fitted on a 150 cm³ engine base converting it to a 150 SX without replacing the crankshaft. PISTON The new 150 SX piston with a diameter of 58 mm is designed for maximal reliability and the reworked shape fits perfectly to the new cylinder layout. DIE-CAST ENGINE CASES For the latest engine generation the KTM engineers designed all new die-cast engine cases featuring a 27 mm higher clutch shaft and 37 mm higher crankshaft position, which has resulted in better mass centralization for improved rideability. FEATHERWEIGHT The main target for the KTM engineers when developing the SX models was a massive weight reduction compared to the previous generation. The result: the current SX models are the slimmest, lightest bikes on the track. AIRBOX The airbox design offers maximum protection of the air filter while ensuring maximum airflow. The large twin-air filter is mounted in a stiff cage, which at the same time holds the system in place. This design is so simple you could still pop a fresh one in with a face full of mud. Without tools. In seconds. FRAME The high-tech, lightweight chrome-moly steel frame is engineered for excellent handling, precise cornering and supreme stability. You can also count on high torsional rigidity and low longitudinal stiffness for better absorption of the energy created by the front and rear suspension sucking up jumps and bumps. In short: more comfort and less rider fatigue. Laterally attached, lightweight engine head stays contribute to a reduced vibration level. The engineers were able to pull off all that, while making the frame two pounds lighter than that of the lightest competitor on the market. In addition, the frame is easier to maintain, easier to work on and supplies more space for the tank and other components. The bike also features an extra-light aluminum subframe, which weighs in at less than 2 pounds. FOOTPEGS Sophisticated ´No Dirt´ footpegs prevent clogging of the footpeg pivot, even when digging in deep ruts. Looking for a higher riding position? Then just mount the footpegs of the MY2017 EXC models, which are 6mm higher than the SX versions. SWINGARM The cast aluminum design offers low weight and a perfect flex behavior. The single-component casting process eliminates any inconsistencies and inherent weak points created by welding. It s better looking as well. FUEL TANK A lightweight polyethylene tank has a capacity of 1.85 gallons. The filler cap has an inside thread, which makes for easy and reliable closure. HANDLEBAR KTM engineers sure know how to handle handlebars. This tapered one, made of high-strength aluminum by NEKEN, is fixed in damped rubber mounts and has two different positions. The 1.98 gallon fuel tank is 0.0% larger than average in this class, allowing the 150 SX to outlast competitors. The 150 SX is powered by a 144 cc, 2-Stroke, water-cooled, single cylinder engine. With a cylinder bore of 56 in and stroke of 58.4 in, its motor is under square, meaning that the cylinder stroke (length) is greater than the bore (width). This makes the engine less powerful than one of similar displacement with a bigger bore, but it does allow for higher torque at low engine speeds.
