This bike is a part of HD history. The 1978 Harley-Davidson XL-1000 Sportster was designed and released in honor of Harley-Davidson's 75th anniversary. Though Harley-Davidson's 75th anniversary took place while under the ownership of AMF, that certainly didn't prevent the release of special models to herald the occasion. The Harley-Davidson XL-1000 featured dual front disc brakes. Sportsters haven't typically been chosen to carry such honors, but along with some specially trimmed Big Twins, Harley built a limited run of celebratory XL-1000s in 1978. Highlighting the jet-black paint were gold striping and gold-tinted cast wheels, while a saddle trimmed in genuine leather added a touch of class. The Harley-Davidson XL-1000's speedometer and tachometer emerged from the headlamp housing. Also on hand were a special 2-into-1 exhaust header and dual front disc brakes. All Sportsters that year boasted a new electronic ignition system to replace the old points and coil setup On Oct-07-14 at 13:26:26 PDT, seller added the following information: Hi Chris, thank you for the inquiry, I had to go out and research the history a little more on the bike. First, Yes it runs, its legally plated, insured and used 1-2 times a week for a few miles just to keep it moving. Second its a rebuild title because the bike was bumped by a car and the previous owner laid the bike over. He stated the rim/tire and exhaust pipe had to be claimed on the insurance and therefor the title changed to a rebuild. All numbers match, the vin and all the badges on the bike and parts taken off say its a 75th anniversary. all the parts that were taken off from the previous owner ( I have not replaced anything other then oil) were in a box, and I went and picked those up today and they will go with the bike. Including the mirror and chrome cover that have the badges on them as well. There are some extra things like saddle bags included. I never put them on since I don't go that far. I am asking for what I got in it, didn't know its such a valuable collectible. I got it cheap and had fun on it and I'm a little big for the bike and would like a bigger one. Riding season up here is limited from May to September and not a big market, so I put it up here in hopes of getting money back. Now the gauges are not the original set, he replaced those with a newer set which showed 6000 miles on it. we since put 3500 on them so the original mileage may or most likely is off. I posted the mileage I know is on the bike for sure. For its age, shape, and this state this Harley is in great condition and would be a good started or collectible. thanks for asking and I hope this helps. The Vin#: 3a28825h8
