I ACQUIRED THIS MOTORCYCLE IN 1998 FORM A RETIRED NAVY CHIEF PETTY OFFICER, WHO WAS THE MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR FOR A NAVAL AIR STATION IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA!HE WORKED ON JET AIRPLANES, AND WAS ONE PARTICULAR AND ANAL RETENTIVE SON OF A GUN...BUT HE WAS TALENTED, AND DID A BEAUTIFUL AND TASTEFUL JOB ON THIS BIKE! IN 1998 I WAS IN MY 30's...HAD PLENTY OF MONEY...AND DECIDED THAT IT WAS TIME TO BUY THAT HARLEY THAT I HAD ALWAYS WANTED!BUT I KNEW THAT I DIDN'T JUST WANT ANY HARLEY, I WANTED ONE THAT SUITED MY STYLE AND PREFERENCES!WELL, I'M NOT A BIG GUY, SO THE DRESSERS JUST FELT CUMBERSOME TO ME! AND WELL THE SPORTSTERS...THEY JUST LOOKED LIKE THE KIND OF BIKE THAT YOU BOUGHT WHEN YOU COULDN'T AFFORD THE BIKE THAT YOU REALLY WANTED!ALSO, GROWING UP JUST 35 MILES NORTH OF THE FAMOSO DRAG STRIP, I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A HOT-RODDER AT HEART! YOU KNOW, SMALL CAR, BIG MOTOR!WELL, WHEN I SAW THIS BIKE, IT WAS LIKE THE PETTY OFFICER HAD READ MY MIND, AND BUILT A BIKE JUST FOR ME!1994 HARLEY-DAVIDSON "FXR" SOFTAIL! A NICE COMPACT CHASSIS, WITH THE BIGGEST HARLEY MOTOR THAT WAS MADE AT THE TIME! MAN, I WAS IN LOVE!BUT IT DIDN'T STOP THERE! THIS MASTER OF STYLE HAD TASTEFULLY CUSTOMIZED THIS BIKE TO BE BOTH BEAUTIFUL, AND RELIABLE...NOT TO MENTION DAMN FAST! HERE IS A LIST OF SOME OF THE PARTS USED...AND THE MODIFICATIONS DONE...WHEN THE PETTY OFFICER BUILT THIS BIKE: CHASSIS...1.) REPLACED THE STOCK FRONT CAST ALUMINUM WHEEL WITH A CHROME LACED WHEEL.2.) UPGRADED THE STOCK SINGLE FRONT BRAKE ROTOR WITH A MUCH SUPERIOR DUAL BRAKE ROTOR SYSTEM...AND THEN REPLACED THE STOCK BRAKE LINES WITH SOME HEAVY-DUTY STAINLESS STEEL LINES.3.) REPLACED THE ORIGINAL FRONT FORK SPRINGS AND OIL, WITH SOME HI-PERFORMANCE "PROGRESSIVE SUSPENSION" STREET FORK SPRINGS, AND COMPETITION LUBRICANT.4.) REPLACED THE STOCK REAR CAST ALUMINUM WHEEL WITH A HI-PERFORMANCE ALUMINUM DISC WHEEL.5.) UPGRADED THE STOCK REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS WITH A PAIR OF ADJUSTABLE "KONI - STEREODAMPER" HI-PERFORMANCE SHOCK ABSORBERS.6.) UPGRADED ALL OF THE STOCK FOOT PEGS, HANDLEBAR GRIPS, and MIRRORS, WITH SOME NICE SUPERIOR AFTERMARKET PIECES. MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION...7.) THE STOCK PISTONS AND RINGS WERE REPLACED WITH A PAIR OF SUPERIOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE UNITS.8.) THE STOCK CAM, LIFTERS, and VALVE-SPRINGS WERE ALL REPLACED WITH A NEW HI-PERFORMANCE "CRANE" CAM KIT.9.) THE ORIGINAL HARLEY CARBURETOR WAS UPGRADED WITH A NEW HI-PERFORMANCE "MIKUNI - HSR42" SMOOTHBORE CARBURETOR. AND THEN TO MAKE SURE THAT THE CARBURETOR HAD PLENTY OF FUEL, THE PETTY OFFICER UPGRADED THE STOCK FUEL TANK PETCOCK WITH A HI-VOLUME "PINGEL - POWER FLO" FUEL VALVE.10.) THE STOCK IGNITION SET-UP WAS UPGRADED WITH A NEW "DYNATEK" PROGRAMMABLE DIGITAL IGNITION SYSTEM...AND THEN FINISHED OFF WITH A NEW PAIR OF "ACCEL" 8.8mm GRAPHITE SUPPRESSION CUSTOM HI-PERFORMANCE SPARK PLUG WIRES. AND THEN, JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THE RIDER DIDN'T TWIST THE MOTOR TOO TIGHT, THE PETTY OFFICER ADDED AN "AUTO METER PRO-SHIFT LITE" ADJUSTABLE RPM METER AND REV-LIMITER.11.) THE RESTRICTIVE STOCK EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH UPGRADED WITH A COMPLETE FREE-FLOWING "CYCLE SHACK" SET-UP...ALONG WITH SOME NEW CHROME SHIELDS AND CLAMPS.12.) AND JUST TO BE SURE THAT ALL OF THIS NEW FOUND POWER MADE IT TO THE REAR WHEEL, THE PETTY OFFICER REPLACED THE FACTORY HARLEY CLUTCH PLATES AND PRESSURE PLATE WITH AN AFTERMARKET HI-PERFORMANCE UNIT. FUEL TANK, SIDE COVERS, FENDERS, ETC...13.) THE FUEL TANK, SIDE COVERS, AND FENDERS ALL APPEAR TO BE ORIGINAL, AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE PAINT ON THEM IS STILL SHINY AND BEAUTIFUL. ALL OF THE PAINT ON THE FRAME LOOKS TO BE ORIGINAL, AND IN GOOD SHAPE. I DON'T BELIEVE THIS BIKE HAS EVER BEEN WRECKED, OR DAMAGED IN ANY WAY.14.) IT LOOKS LIKE SOME OF THE SMALL ACCESSORY COVERS AND BOLTS HAVE BEEN UPGRADED.15.) THE FACTORY ORIGINAL HARLEY SPEEDOMETER AND DRIVE CABLE HAVE BEEN UPGRADED WITH A STYLISH "DRAG SPECIALTIES" HI-PERFORMANCE UNIT, AND REPLACEMENT CABLE.16.) THE FACTORY ORIGINAL HARLEY SEAT HAS BEEN UPGRADED WITH A FLAMED "MIKE CORBIN SADDLE"...AND IT LOOKS TO BE IN GREAT CONDITION. NOW, IF YOU ARE WONDERING HOW I KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT THE BUILDING OF THIS BIKE, THEN I'LL LET YOU IN ON A LITTLE SECRET! BESIDES TALKING WITH THE PETTY OFFICER FOR ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE BUYING THIS BIKE, I ALSO BENEFITTED FROM THE FACT THAT HE WAS SO METICULOUS ABOUT HOW IT WAS BEING BUILT AT THE TIME, THAT HE KEPT NEARLY EVERY BROCHURE, SPECIFICATION CHART, AND TUNING INSTRUCTION SHEET THAT HE EVER RECEIVED ALONG WITH THE NEW PARTS!ALL OF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THE BIKE, AS WELL AS A STACK OF RECEIPTS TOTALLING MORE THAN $5,500.00, THAT DETAIL SOME OF THE WORK THAT WAS DONE TO IT DURING THE BUILD! NOW THAT I HAVE DETAILED THE HISTORY OF THE BUILD OF THIS BIKE...LET ME TELL YOU WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO IT IN THE 17 YEARS THAT IT'S BEEN IN MY POSSESSION!I ACQUIRED IT IN LATE 1998...RODE IT ABOUT FIVE TIMES...PROBABLY PUT 50 MILES ON IT...AND THEN PARKED IT IN MY SHOP, WHERE IT HAS SAT EVER SINCE!ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO I DECIDED TO SELL IT! SO I REMOVED THE FUEL TANK...FILLED IT UP WITH FRESH FUEL...AND THEN LET IT SIT FOR A MONTH TO DISOLVE ANY TRACES OF THE OLD FUEL OR FUEL VARNISH! THEN I COMPLETELY FLUSHED AND WASHED IT OUT, BEFORE REPLACING THE RESERVE CROSSOVER FUEL LINE, AND THEN REINSTALLING IT ON THE BIKE!LUCKILY, I ALWAYS DRAIN MY MOTORCYCLE CARBURETORS BEFORE STORING THEM, SO ALL I HAD TO DO WAS REPLACE THE FUEL LINE FROM THE PETCOCK TO THE CARBURETOR, AND THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS READY TO GO!I CHECKED ALL OF THE FLUIDS, AND EVERYTHING WAS JUST LIKE THE DAY I PARKED IT! IN FACT, THERE WASN'T A DROP OF OIL OR FLUID ON THE FLOOR ANYWHERE NEAR WHERE THE BIKE WAS SITTING...SO THAT TELLS YOU A LOT ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THIS MOTORCYCLE!SO THEN I BUY A NEW BATTERY...CHARGE IT UP...AND THEN MOUNT IT IN BIKE!NOW FOR THE MOMENT OF TRUTH! I TURN THE KEY ON...PULL THE CHOKE CABLE...AND THEN HIT THE STARTER! TO MY PLEASEANT SURPRISE, SHE FIRES RIGHT UP, AND SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE SHE DID WHEN I PARKED HER 17 YEARS AGO!SHE'S IDLING A LITTLE LOW...SO I WARM HER UP...ADJUST THE AIR/FUEL MIXTURE SCREW...AND THEN TAKE HER FOR A RIDE AROUND THE PARKING LOT!EVERYTHING ON HER STILL WORKS LIKE THE DAY I PUT HER IN THE SHOP...AND I THINK THAT WITH A LITTLE SHAKE-DOWN, SHE'LL MAKE A WONDERFUL AND RELIABLE LITTLE CRUISER FOR SOMEONE!
