1957 BMW R26 Project Bike I bought this bike 20 years ago as a project for my Dad and me. It was running when we first got it, but the slingers were full and the crank bearing failed during the first trip around the neighborhood. We made some progress on and off over the years, but life got in the way and it stalled. Time for a fresh start with a new enthusiastic owner! Here’s what it is: 1957 BMW R26 250cc single with matching frame, engine and original nameplate. Clear Illinois title in my name. Here’s where we left it: Crank rebuilt by Bley Engineering, and installed by Cycle Werks of Barrington (Illinois). Original piston but new rings. Top end not done – didn’t seem to need it. Timing chain tensioner added. 3,636 miles on the odometer. That’s probably not right, but it can’t be too high because it is still the original dimension piston. 20K maybe…? Sheet metal is all original, except for the tank toolbox cover and the side toolbox cover. All sheet metal is in solid, paintable condition except the rear fender hinge which is damaged. There are also dents on the headlight shell, rear shock housing, and rear hubcap.Gas tank is perfect inside and out but covered in a cheap home paint job. Paint is not original on any of the pieces or frame. There are some chips and some small rust spots here and there. Any rust is surface rust. Nothing is heavily pitted or rusted through.Taillight is the “fake” Eber style. Seat has an interesting homemade frame.Michelin Macadam tires (and wheel bearings) are new. Zero miles but 10 years old. Clutch and throttle controls are in great condition. Correct, original 1/26/46 carb was rebuilt by Bing International and never installed. It is still in the sealed package from Bing!Front fender brace is new. Misc. other small parts are new. Includes some new parts that aren’t installed. For example, new handlebar risers, new tank emblems, new exhaust pipe, muffler and hardware. New NOS coil, new control cables, and a new front wiring harness. Plus all sorts small bushings, rubber bits, etc. I will email a full list of what is included on request.More photos at http://s286.photobucket.com/user/steves-garage/library/BMW%20R26 All of the parts are there to reassemble except for the following: fuel petcock, mirrors, correct handlebars, correct horn, and some misc. screws, nuts, and/or washers. Since we first pulled it apart, the rolling frame has been stored in a garage and the engine and other parts have been in a dry basement. This bike is NOT covered in years of crud or layers of rust. So you can pick up where Dad and I left off: assemble it and run it a while, or take the rest apart and repaint everything. That was the decision that stalled us. And the color. Basic BMW black? Or maybe Dover white. Or the red is really cool too… Shipping may present a small problem. Most of the major motorcycle carriers will only take an assembled bike. So all of the loose parts will have to be shipped separately. Or I can install as many as I can before the bike ships. We can work that out. Local pickup is also an option. I will work with you - within reason! Overseas bidders are welcome, but first you must show me how you plan to have it shipped.
