2004 BMW R 1150 RT, This is the police version of the 1150RT. Heavier duty electrics, cooling etc. This is is a former California Highway Patrol bike. I have had this bike for several seasons and never had a problem with it. Plenty of power even with a full touring load. Toured upper and lower Michigan, around the lake, across on the ferry. All good. HERE IS THE DEAL: Last season (2014) I rode this up to Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI to view the vintage motorcycle racing. I didn't realize it right away but the rear brake fluid must have dropped below the norm, or the rear brake pedal was partially depressed or both. At any rate, the rear servo motor of the ABS pump fried. Because it was the rear brake, I continued the trip without problems. Returned home and still rode the bike around town with out any issues. Most braking is front wheel anyway. The only annoyance was the brake warning light that flashed. Did the rersearch about the cost of a new ABS pump. Pricey. There is also a lot of maintenance with yearly brake fluid changes. Add to that the whiney sound of the servo motors, and it seemed to me that it is a lot of stuff to have to address with this BMW system. Don't get me wrong. I like ABS brakes. Honda's are great. I just don't like BMW's version even though they do work OK. I saw an online tutorial on how to delete ABS on this bike. A BMW mechanic who owns an independent shop outlines how to do the delete. Here is the link: s:// /watch?v=7xZMewBazMI So I did the delete. Step by step. No short cuts. Used the same brake lines. No leaks. Wired up the relays as directed so the brake lights, etc. would work. Took the appropriate amount of time and care to do it right. PROBLEM IS NOW THE BIKE WON'T RUN. Odd, because the only thing that is significantly different, is that the hot wire that feeds the ABS unit is capped off. I had considered putting ABS unit back into the bike, but I just don't want to deal with it anymore. I like the bike, but have moved on. I have several bikes I ride, and it is time for this one to go. A bit of regret, because even with 106K miles it has run strong, used no oil, and shifts into all gears smoothly. It has had good maintenance. Had recently installed revised cam chain tensioner as a routine update. Good rubber, everything works. Has two sets of lids for the integral luggage. One set is the 'city cases' which are standard issue for police. A second set of deep touring lids. Also an aftermarket top trunk. Seat and plastic body cladding are all in good shape. I will sell this bike ( clean title ) for $2000.00 no less. Fix it, part it out whatever you like. This thing has lot of miles left in it and is a good deal for someone who has the time to work on it. NOTE: pic is a file photo. Actual bike has a tall large storage trunk.
