For 2002, BMW has updated the bike as the R1150RS with a styling makeover, a bump in displacement, servo-assisted, partially integrated anti-lock brakes and a six-speed transmission.The revamped R1150RS retains all the technical wonders that made the original R1100RS so functional, starting with the air/oil-cooled, horizontally opposed twin-cylinder engine with four valves per cylinder and cam-in-head design. A 2mm increase in bore to 101mm bumps displacement to 1,130cc. Compression has been increased from 10.7 to 11.3:1What really makes the R1100 series unique is its suspension system and stressed-member engine. There is no conventional frame; the engine block itself forms the central structure of the bike. Subframes attached to the engine support the fork and seat assemblies. The result is an extremely rigid assembly, and lighter weight.The oval-section fork tubes are anchored by the Telelever, a horizontal A-arm the legs of which pivot on the engine housing; its other end attaches to a ball joint on the fork brace. The fork legs locate the front wheel and contain only light lubricating oil; a small shock absorber (now adjustable for rebound damping) and coil spring link the forward end of the A-arm with the fork assembly and provide the suspension.The R1150RS also carries over the Paralever single-sided swingarm/driveshaft housing, which utilizes a U-joint at each end to feed the up/down jacking motion of the shaft into the engine case/frame and cancel out most of it. The new Paralever has been shortened from 520mm to 506mm (about 0.55 inch) and restyled for a more muscular look.The Telelever fork and Paralever, in concert with the rigid engine housing, help to keep the motorcycle remarkably level, no matter how the throttle and brakes are used or abused. The result is an extremely stable bike that exhibits no twitchiness in bumpy turns, and which (because of the Telelever's geometry) dives only minimally under heavy braking. The RS offers a range of ergonomic adjustability. The rider's portion of the seat can be set at any of three positions, providing 30.7, 31.5 or 32.2 inches of seat height. Likewise, the handgrip section of each handlebar can be moved fore and aft a couple of inches as well as rotated for optimal angle.With the help of a fast-idle adjustment the fuel-injected bike starts easily. Ease out the hydraulically actuated dry clutch and notice that first gear is relatively tall. The new close-ratio, six-speed transmission shifts much more crisply, but ratios have been changed.
