1982 Yamaha XZ550 Vision, The XZ550 was the first Yamaha model to feature automotive-style downdraft carburetors with the air cleaner box mounted atop the carburetors, as opposed to most motorcycles' sidedraft carburetors with their side-mounted air cleaners.The XZ550 has a water-cooled engine.Here are some notes that I found about it,--The Yamaha Vision was originally conceived in the late 1970s when motorcycling was at its peak, and spent three years in development, being overseen by a small group of designers and enthusiasts rather than "committee think". Several high profile external design houses contributed to the design of the XZ550 including GK Design Associates for design, and reputedly Cosworth for the engine and Porsche for the final drive. The initial models were designed to be a performance bike and GK's goal was "to make it into the most advanced super sport bike in terms of both styling and riding performance" The XZ550 succeeded on both fronts, its comfort on long rides and veritable torque-monster engine matched by its distinctive deep V-Twin exhaust beat and neck-snapping performance. Up for sale, is one of two 1982 Yamaha XZ550RJ Visions that I own. Date code on front label: 12/81 For its time, this was one advanced motorcycle, designed and engineered by Cosworth and taking 3 years of research and development to bring it to market. It has a large bore Liquid cooled V-Twin engine, 80mm bore and a short 55mm stroke, making it a high revving (10k RPM) engine with 4 valves per cylinder, and two exhaust ports on each head. It is also shaft drive, yet does not exhibit any shaft jacking like some shaft drive bikes do. The bike sports a fork-mounted sport fairing, rare and desirable, on its trailing-axle front forks. The rims are 1.85 - 18" front and 2.15 - 18" rear, sporting a pair of Bridgestone BT45 Battleaxe sport tires, a 90/90-18 front and a 130/80-18 rear. It also has a hooligan MAC 2-into-2 exit on the right side exhaust that really gives a bark when you rev it to the 10k RPM red-line. The rear shock has been upgraded to this millennia, with the addition of a 2004 Triumph TT600 rear mono shock, fully adjustable for damping, rebound, and preload (see picture). I also upgraded the voltage rectifier/regulator to a MOSFET Shindegen from a CBR1000RR, so it has modern electronics also, and installed a heatsink on the stator cover to dissipate unwanted heat from the alternator! These two mods help the stator live a longer life! This bike really handles well, and is ready to take to the race track for your track day pleasure, or perhaps a vintage race bike conversion. Or just a fun back road burner for the sport tourer! I took my race school on my other 1982 Vision, and it will really roll some rubber up on the tires, check out the front tire picture! It has one tiny tear in the front part of the seat (see picture), but is still in good shape. This bike is an original paint survivor, and is delicious in the Brilliant Red Yamaha paint. There is some paint chips, and small rust spots on the frame, but very nice otherwise.I purchased a black one back in 1982, brand new, and have been kicking myself for getting rid of it since 1985. It would pull 11k RPM in top gear! Now I have two, and one has to go, no room in the garage! For any shipping YOU are responsible for picking up the bike or arranging the shipping of the bike. This is a special Vision. This particular model in no longer made (Street model), if you want one you now need to buy a Tour model and remove the trunk and buy a passenger backrest and rear body panel. This bike is being sold to buy something else.. maybe a Spyder or street rod, or some other toy. This has the following options and upgrades... Lloyds VM-1 performance cams ($520) * Lloyds adjustable cam timing wheel ($147)* Power Commander, tuned (265)* Ness performance air filters (both) ($100) Factory Stage 1 pipes (fast... and quiet!) Russell speed bleeders (brake bleeders), ($?) * these items were installed at a cost of over $1000 labor, but worth every penny. Basically I spent over $3200 making a great bike even better... that is better as long as you want a super-fast, super-reliable, super-comfy touring bike. Ness was the only shop to do routine work, like tires. I do not trust most shops with my bikes, I am very picky. The bike has the factory chrome package, all in good condition but the front tip-overs have some chrome pitting, easy to replace. Some of the standard features include, heated seats, heated grips, electronic cruise control, programmable audio system which changes volume with vehicle speed, linked brakes, HID driving light (actually, fog light), electric adjustable windshield, rear air suspension, with manual pump, 6 speed overdrive transmission, etc. The bike only has 29.600 miles, and has never been down, always has Golden Spectro 20W-50 synthetic oil, K&N oil filters, both with 3k change intervals. Make no mistake, this bike is fast... do not buy this if you are a novice rider, or lack good judgement when on 2 wheels. I have gotten on the freeway and found myself doing 120 before half a mile. The bike had the cam advance and Power Commander tuned to perfection with the pipes... I wanted a fast bike I could still talk to my passenger with on the freeway. Here is the deal.... KBB says the bike, IF STOCK with 33,365 miles would be worth $10,135. My deal is to sell for the KBB prIce ($10,135), with far less miles, and $3200 worth of the right goodies added, included. Bike may be sold locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early. Spare me the insults... no low-ball offers, not on a bike this nice. You want a test ride? 2011 Victory Vision Tour with 70,330 + miles. Recently purchased from original owner. Sold my last 2009 Vic with 92,000 miles on it prior to shoulder surgery in 2014. Now left wrist injury requires surgery and will limit my riding for a year. Bike runs excellent and was well maintained by previous original owner, and me. This bike deserves to be ridden more often she is not a garage trophy! Minor body imperfections (scratch, body nicks,) but nothing overwhelming. Bike looks great overall. Cruise control not operating. Heated seats and hand grips, ABS, and a custom Kenwood stereo installed. I can take more specific photos if necessary. I have no reservations about this bike and would take it cross country tomorrow as it is. Tires may have 2000 miles on them and brakes are newer. Please ask questions if needed before bidding.
